Strong support for Greenwich from Australian journal

The well-respected Australian journal National Observer has just come out with a very strong pro-Greenwich article in the new Autumn 2003 issue.

Headed "When Does Governmental Control Over Universities Become Totalitarian," by Observer editor Dr. I. C. F. Spry, Q.C."

    A few quotations:

"At a time when there are [great] discrepancies in the standards of public universities, it is particularly unfortunate that the Commonwealth Government...has permitted itself to be led by bureaucrats in the Dept. for Education, Science and Training to discriminate against private universities in order to achieve a monopoly of publicly funded universities..."

"The attack on Greenwich University...resulted finally in legislation passed in the Federal Parliament in late 2002 (which) effectively closed Greenwich University... This action of the Commonwealth Government...was strongly opposed by the Government of Norfolk of Norfolk Island. There was no genuine consultation with that Government, which was over-ridden in a manner that might be regarded a contemptuous."

"Indeed, in the Norfolk Island Parliament the matter was debated on 20 November 2002 and a resolution of protest [and of support of Greenwich] was passed unanimously."

"Dr. [Brendan] Nelson [Minister for Education...] has not exercised proper supervision and control over his Department, and moreover his attitude toward the Norfolk Island legislature has been tactless at best and insulting at worst.... [T]he suppression of Greenwich University evidences a serious threat to academic diversity."

The www.greenwich.edu website is still up and running, but it seems that they are struggling with their approval application?

The California approval process is an expensive and time-consuming one in the best of times.

The gossip from Sacramento suggests that things are quite in turmoil at the Bureau for Private Postsecondary (etc.), with one of its senior officials (Sheila Hawkins) reassigned and, it is said, suing the Bureau.

While the Bureau used to average more than five approvals a month, I am trying to check out a private Email that suggested they haven't done any new approvals yet this year.

New schools are still appearing on the BPPVE website.

But this might explain how American International University of Management and Technology managed to pop up in California with "temporary approval", soon after it had been chased out of Hawaii by the ever-vigilant Mr. Brunton.

    http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8568

If the inspection process has crashed but the state is still posting new schools with temporary approvals without inspecting them, then California may be in danger of becoming a new Wyoming. Since we know that the mill operators read Degreeinfo, here's your chance, guys!

Even if the process rights itself, it's probably gonna be hard to revoke those temporary approvals. Schools will scream like banshees and contest their delisting, and there's gonna be some costly litigation involved, I suspect.

I am fairly sure, Bill, that California has always given provisional approval without benefit of inspection, as long as the school says clearly in their ads and literature that this is the case, and that their continued existence depends on an inspection within six (?) months.

At least that is what I was told when I was looking into the University of Berkeley (located two blocks from the campus of the unconnected University of California at Berkeley). Their sign has been taken down, which means perhaps they didn't get their approval.

For the moment, Greenwich University didn't accept any new application until accreditation had been approved. I hope this status is not permanent..............Any Opinion ?

    Greenwich state:

We are not accepting applications until we finish our accreditation process.

We thank you for your interest in Greenwich University and look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Isn't there a difference between 'accreditation' and 'approval'?

    Cheers,

    George

The 415 area code telephone number that used to be on Greenwich's site is disconnected too. This will be a hardship for students who want to contact Greenwich for old Norfolk Island-era transcripts. (I guess former students will have to take their chances with the Mill Valley p.o. box.)

It's nice to see another state approved school coming along. There are never too many "Good" schools. :)

But even the P.O. box is no longer given on the site.

I passed this information along to former Greenwich Chancellor John Walsh of Brannagh (who is still blocked from using this forum from Norfolk Island), and he seemed quite concerned, and said that Francesca McCartney has resigned as president of Greenwich, replaced by Norman Pearson (who is also on the faculty of Capella).

It is just this kind of thing that reminds us of the much lower level of scrutiny offered to California-approved universities vis-a-vis accredited schools. When California used to offer its approval to a few programs, it had some meaning. Even when it went to institutional approval, their scope was limited and they seemed thorough. But when they required (mostly) all unaccredited schools to be approved, they widened their scope unmanageably, and to the point where it means very little academically.
