The list includes many of the known universities offering DL degrees. I hope this list will help those who are considering Australian University DL programs. weak source. too old. --- (Reference : Dean Ashenden and Sandra Milligan (1996). Good Universities Guide to Management Education. Australia: Reed Reference.) - Available on request! The above ranking are based on 1993 research. ---
The reference appears to be old. University of Queensland as far as I know has stepped out of the arena on distance learning. Edith Cowan is one university which has gained considerable reputation in the distance learning area. University of Southern Queensland is regarded incountry as a premier university in the distance learning area. The University of New England is a university of substance in distance learning is not mentioned. The Law school of the University of Southern Cross received substantial funding from the New South Wales government a few years ago which would place it a superior category for law. It has a distance law course for those that are interested. Charles Sturt ,since that publication, has taken the New South Wales Police Academy and is the premier institution in Australia for policing and, perhaps, criminal justice issues. It is the home of the Australian Graduate School of Police Management. I didn't see Griffith University mentioned which is one of the largest universities in my state and has an excellent reputation overseas with partnerships with US universities. James Cook is the university for North Queensland and the centre of marine biology studies on the Great Barrier Reef. Recently, it just received funding in that area from the federal government. The thing to remember for those outside the commonwealth is that Australian Universities are incorporated by generally a Private Act of Parliament. There have been moves to create 8 supervarsities for research etc whilst the rest remain teaching institutions. This has not yet taken root. The process of accreditation as maintained in the USA does not exist in Australia. Distance students grade the university on its responsiveness to its needs in the main. Whilst there will always be arguments as which is the better university there does not exist the disparity between performance in the range of credentials as exists in the United States. Competition is fierce for students and diploma mills are viciously attacked by the legitimate bodies. It is probably fair to say that the universities in Australia are basically UK in structure and tradition.
Re: Re: Re: Ranking of Australian Universities Exactly thats what i was thinking I remember someone talking about Charles Sturt as a lower tier Australian University.. then i did a search and came out with this list.. but did not see the date of research.. Sorry !
The trouble with the world today is that by the time something is published it is history. Probably of more interest,we are negotiating a free trade agreement with the United States so it will be interesting to see how this affects university products from either side of the fence. Are American universities that may wish to operate in Australia entitled to subsidized positions for local students? Does this apply to DL students who go to an American University over the internet. If it didn't it would mean that the local unis would have access to a govt. subsidy where the American Uni would not.Not a level playing field. Can an American student of an Australian University apply for federal grants etc in the US? What if the person does it by distance learning? What does this mean for Regional Accreditation in the US and Australian universities, if anything? Any ideas?
Re: Re: Ranking of Australian Universities "Good Universities Guide to Management Education" Presumably all of the other programs mentioned above are not included in this ranking. Tom Nixon
The "Good Universities Guide" was not the original source. I believe the original was a government ranking (now discontinued). E.g. see http://www.admin.uwa.edu.au/reg/QASummary.htm
