I'm about to graduate from TESC. I'm awaiting judgment on some portfolios. Meanwhile, I've been looking around for a distance humanities MA program.

I found HUX, and have received their material. Under the transcript section, it says that TESC grads must submit transcripts from all colleges attended. But I've (hopefully) earned all credit through TESC. Will the HUX program exclude me because of that? And, yes, I've emailed the HUX people twice and have gotten no response in three weeks. Anybody?

    Thanks in advance.

Any school regardless of its accreditation if has not responded back more than 3 weeks I wouldn't bother to attend there. [IMG]
In my opinion, HUX doesn't give you any respect. If I were you, I would put HUX on my black list. If you don't have a black list, this forum would do it! [IMG]

I don't mean to be insulting, but if I were a HUX employee and I saw your request, I would be wondering how I could re-state a policy that is already very clear.

Is it the term 'attended' in their policy that concerns you? Really what they mean is 'earned.' You technically won't be attending CSU-DH.

Also, I would disregard Erma's advice about blacklisting; you probably left a couple HUX employees scratching their heads ...

I'm inclined to agree with Erma. I've seen a lot of online complaints from HUX students who have difficulty getting replies from same. Sorry to have confused you, Pete.

That language seems to be new and wasn't there when I applied. Apparently they are saying that if you attended universities X,Y and Z, then transferred credits from all of them into TESC where you ultimately graduated, you are still going to have to request transcripts from X,Y and Z. The fact that the courses are also listed on your TESC transcript isn't enough.

Then it doesn't apply to you, does it? Just send your TESC transcript, if that's the only school you attended.

Why would they? I am speculating here, but my guess is that they want all the transcripts in order to really see your previous academic performance. Perhaps some people did poorly at several schools, then kind of selected their best courses from each one and transfered those courses into a compilation transcript at TESC, giving them a much better (apparent) GPA.

CSUDH probably just wants to prevent that kind of grade laundering.

Then try telephoning them. That's how I interacted with the CSUDH administration and they were unfailingly helpful.

Call them and your questions will be cleared up in a couple of minutes.

If you don't want to attend CSUDH, then don't. Both you and they will do just fine.

I don't mean to be insulting, but this is an important issue. CSUDH is a large state university. The HUX program is a small office dealing with 600 students. They just started a new semester, and they've been busy signing everyone up and getting course materials out to all of them.

If you enroll, you are going to be dealing with bureaucracy. Nobody is going to hold your hand. Your paperwork may well stall on somebody's desk or something. If you are gonna survive this thing and ultimately graduate, you will have to be a little more assertive than perhaps you normally are. I think that in general, that's true of all distance education.

E-mail isn't really the best way to deal with an office. It always seems to take the lowest priority. Sending an e-mail, then stewing about it for three weeks definitely isn't the right way. Personally, I'm resolutely low-tech. If e-mail doesn't work, pick up your trusty old telephone (black rotary if possible) and call them. Problems that could take days or weeks to clear up with e-mail can be solved in a minute.

So if you are still interested in CSUDH, pick up your phone on Monday. Call them. Ask them to explain the paragraph in the admissions materials that mentions TESC. As I read it, it doesn't apply to you at all, just to those that transferred credit into TESC from a variety of other schools. It's just telling those people that they have to request transcripts from those schools as well as from TESC.

And while you are at it, ask them how they deal with credit/no-credit type grading, which I suspect you have a lot of from TESC. Ask them how they calculate a GPA for you if you didn't take courses for grades. That may be a more realistic problem, although I know for a fact that there are TESC graduates in the HUX program, so they must have some way of handling it.

I *strongly* disagree with the above. Particularly at state schools, the staff is often overworked and underpaid, and at certain times of the year, things are backlogged.

There have been times when both Regents and Edison have had correspondence delays. At Regents, it's been as long as 45 days. Poor service, yes... but it also gets better, and if you pester, your request will be handled.

I think a little patience and understanding is in order.

You are aware of the problem. Why you have questions? Please take 10 seconds to think about it... [IMG]

    Howdy!

I spoke to Nicole Ballard of CSUDH last week, and it seems that much of the HUX office is out with the flu. I'm in the program (graduated on December 22nd, actually), so I can answer any questions you might have about it.

For my part, I earned my entire BA through distance learning -- 114 hours through exams, 6 hours through Ole Miss correspondence courses, and 3 hours through a Penn State correspondence course. They let me in with no problem.

What the transcript requirement means is that you have to have transcripts sent from every school or agency responsible for credit on your transcript. For example, I had to have the transcripts from Ole Miss and Penn State sent in addition to the one from Regents.

That's really all there is to it.

    Good luck!

    Peace,

    Tom

    Tom,

I got my Bachelor's from Regents, too.

BTW, did you concentrate in one specific discipline at CSU-DH, or did you go with the interdisciplinary option?
