Does anyone know of any completely non-residential Master of Creative Arts degree programs, either U.S. or foreign? Thanks!
Creative Arts Masters I'm not sure if you're set on the Master of Creative Arts nomenclature. If you're flexible with the degree title and interested in creative writing, check Central Queensland University's Master of Letters (MLitt) in Creative Writing: http://www.ahs.cqu.edu.au/humanities/mlitt/creat.html The total cost for the program is currently $7000 and rising considering the weakening US dollar, but it is still remarkably less than many of the low residency U.S. MFAs (i.e. Goddard, Bennington), which range closer to 30K total. Best John
Dennis, I'm interested in creative writing. John, I've checked the CQU program; I don't like the course offerings. If I have to take courses in addition to a creative thesis and critique, I'd like more choices in literature, especially poetry.
CQU MLItt Michael, Just to clarify how the CQU Mlitt is set up (since I've considered it myself)... 4 courses in creative writing including Elements of Writing 1, Elements of Writing 2, Writing Short Fiction, Writing Poetry and Short Dramatic Pieces. These constitute 50% of the program and are done in the first year (2 courses per term) if enrolled full-time. The other 50% of the program is a long creative work of poetry or prose. No additional courses need to be taken. Good luck! John
Thanks, John. For those interested, I've found two MCA in Creative Writing programs that I don't believe have been mentioned here; both are Australian Schools: The University of the Sunshine Coast (I like that name!): http://www.usc.edu.au/faculty/arts/programs/postgraduate/mca.htm The University of Newcastle: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/policy/academic/masters/master_of_creative_arts.htm The Sunshine Coast degree is 12000 Austarlian Dollars, which is about 7800 U.S. dollars, and I believe the Newcastle degree is about the same. Rather expensive, but not nearly as expensive as some U.S. programs.
Mike, I'm beginning to think that may indeed be the best option cost-wise, or perhaps Fort Hays State--unless a person could get one of the Postgraduate Research Scholarships or other institutional scholarship available from these Australian schools. These funds might be available only for full-time study, though.
