    Hi,

I have been "lurking" for the past few weeks here. Great site! Anyway, I am currently a student at Baker doing their MBA with a concentration in MIS. I will be finished in less then one year. I am enjoying the program and so far really think Baker has a great program. Once I complete my MBA, I would like to go on for my PhD possibly and I am thinking of either Touro or Capella. I can tell by Capella's Web site that their online format is similar to Baker in that they have a set begin and end date. But I do not see this on the Touro site, and wondered are their semesters have start and stop dates and are they in an online form?

From what I can tell, this board seems to favor Touro, but also I have heard some members mention Capella is very good also. My plan is to teach at the university level, will a PhD from Touro or Capella pose problems for my career goals?

Thanks in advance for the information!

I am no expert in this area but I imagine if your goal is to do anything but adjunct faculty teaching you may find dl PhD's a tough sell. You may want to refer to the article under Off Topic regarding the PhD glut (from bricks & mortar institutions). So, to be frank even a b&m PhD is no guarentee at all of a faculty job (bad odds). You should be able to do adjunct at universities, or instructor at community college, etc.

I favor Touro simply because it is associated with a b&m school (which has a medical college, etc) like Nova. May hold you in better standing...................I don't know. Folks who have expressed anything here seem very pleased with both. My understanding is that Capella is very well run (made accreditation in record time).

A few years ago there was an interesting series of articles in US News & WR about PhD's and their struggles. One worked in a Community College and said her academic career was finished because she worked at a CC she was considered 'damaged goods' by academia. Another one worked in a coffee shop and was fairly happy because she could write. Others were finding great success in the corporate world due to a trend (??) to see PhD's as having valuable skills.

Good luck. Research your options well & follow your heart.

"... and wondered are their semesters have start

Touro does have start and stop dates ...

As to your query about "online form", the
core Ph.D. courses are in an "online form",
the elective Ph.D. courses are provided in
    a CD format.

As to DL Ph.D. ... ask that question again in
5 years. As North mentioned there are many
challenges at present, for ANY Ph.D., as to
how to best secure a full time position in a
    4-year college or university setting.

    Hope this helps ...

You might want to add Northcentral to your list. Notwithstanding some of the administrative problems folks have mentioned in other threads, I see them with a much better long-term upside than either of the other two. Why? Very responsive to the marketplace, and significantly less expensive. Like the Japanese car companies a few decades ago. Potential Lexus-quality product at a Toyota price.

what about having a DL degree (MS) for online teaching? Is DL degree acceptable for online computing course teaching at colleges/Universities. for example UOP, Athabasca, Excelsior, UoL ? or do they expect instructors to have B&M degrees ? Whats the minimum requirements, Bachelors or Masters degree ?

    Regards,

In viewing the discussions in the earlier threads, I wanted to mention two items. First, as a current Ph.D. student at Touro, they do have a scheduled calender for taking courses as was mentioned previously. Secondly, the pursuit of the teaching jobs, I feel rely on a number of criteria’s. The "subject" you are going to teach in significant. As a business student and teacher at the present time. I have found a number of opportunities. If you are specializing in Liberal Arts, it may be a long wait. Another aspect is what outside research and work you have done in your field, such as business experience in the corporate world. Finally, is the area you live and type of academic institution you are pursuing. There are many factors to success in the academic world.

If you are interested in teaching full time with your PhD from Capella or Touro, my only advise is to teach with your MBA first ( I assume that it is from a B&M) as an adjunct in order to open your self some doors.

I believe that there are two ways to get into fulll time teaching. Either you have a PhD from a top university or you have some good connections in the university. Some universities have unions and give priorities to active members so if you have taught for them for several years with your MBA , you might be able to get there with a PhD from Touro, Capella, USQ, charles sturt or any low tier university.

However, I agree with North that the idea of getting a full time tenure track job by only using a DL PhD can be a little be illusional. You will need to top it off with some publications, teaching experience, working experience and good networking.

Very good point. DL institutions normally see the DL degree as an asset.

    Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for all the advice so far! Once I complete my MBA at Baker College, I will try and get some type of teaching experience with it while I pursue my PhD.. I am not opposed to teaching in an online format, in fact I think it might be challenging. I also am not opposed to being adjunct since I assumed most full time faculty being this way.

I must say, I am leaning towards Touro as far as my PhD goes. They have been very prompt in answering my emails and not just a short email but quite detailed. This is always something I look for, how quickly and thoroughly an email is answered. So far I have not received any replies from Capella, but maybe they are sending through postal mail. I also feel better about Touro because some of you being current students have pointed out that indeed their semesters have definite start and end dates.

Again, thank you for all your advices and insights! It is greatly appreciated!

I agree with RFValue also on this ...

One more point ... as you plan out your academic course
work there. Check to see what your local setting requires as
to the number of hours in the field that you desire to teach
in ... here in Tenn., that figure is having completed at least
18 hours of graduate level course work in the field of choice.

So just having your MBA (DL or B&M) may not automatically
qualify you to instruct in as many fields as you might think ...

Again ... check NOW to see what you setting will require and
plan out you academics to meet those requirements.

One other idea I'll toss out ... consider being a Graduate
Assistant ... that might help you also, by demonstrating
that you do have some experience working with students.
