    Hi,
I just wanted to introduce myself.
I graduated from the University of the State of New York back in '92. Now I am a full time security guard, part-time journalist and substitute teacher. I am looking for a really cheap Master's program with no residency requirements. I live in Southern California.
If I can do any little thing to help... let me know.

There's one thing you could do . . . narrow the field a bit by saying something about your preferred field(s) of study. There are enough affordable programs out there that this would help with the selection process.

Amen to Jack. If you can provide us with a field we can be far more helpful.

Without knowing what field of study you're interested in, I'll mention the Master of Liberal Studies program at Fort Hays State University, which has several concentrations from which to choose. It's RA and very affordable.

    Hi Janboi,

You might find Lawrie Miller's site of interest. It lists many inexpensive degrees, including the Fort Hays State Master of Liberal Studies (<4000) that was previously mentioned, and the CSU Dominguez Hills Master of Humanities (~4650).

    Tony

p.s. The site also lists many 'GAAP' programs from foreign universities.

    Janboi,

Because you don't mention where you live, exactly, in southern California, I will proceed with the assumption that you live in Bakersfield and (like all the others) for some reason are afraid to admit it in cyberspace:)

Since you are a security guard, you must work at one of the big bank buildings, like B of A, or perhaps, a hospital. I think, in that case, the best degree you could use to do well in your environment would be an MBA.

    One word. Touro.

wow! thanks for all the help!

I really have eclectic tastes... I guess what I am really looking for is a contract/research master's where i can study how groups make decisions... where conflict resolution meets social choice.
again thanks for all the help.

You should check out the MA in Behavioral Science - Negotiation and Conflict Management from CSU DH.

There are a number of research based Masters programs at Australian/South African/ Brit universities. These programs usually involve only a large dissertation with no course work. All three have good educational systems.

University of Zululand (UNIZUL) is one some here are pursuing doctorates through. A doc is less than 2,000 for the entire program. You would need to approach the department with your preposed area of study and see if there is a faculty member willing to take you on. In addition to UNIZUL there are others (higher tier) such as U of Pretoria, etc. In all cases with research doctorates you have to ask around as residency (if any) seems to depend on whom you ask.

Another option may be the University of London. As I recall they have an M.A. in Organizationa behavior.

Those foreign programs are probably the most cost efficient (especially South Africa).

    Ph.D from BA?

I have heard it is possible to go straight from a BA to a doctorate. Is it just a matter of convincing a professor to "take me on?" Do you guys know anyone who has gone that route?

If you only have a bachelor degree with some backgrounds in computer networking and want a Ph. D from a respected university, Indiana State University (Larry Bird University) Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Technology Management should be one of your choices. You just need:

a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale,

a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores of 500 on the verbal, quantitative, and analytical general tests,

    Five letters of recommendation,

Two years of occupational experience and

a statement of student's goal for selecting the program.

    Hi Janboi:

No, I am not getting my Ph. D. that way. I, however, have taken a few graduate classes at East Carolina University (a participating member of Indiana State University Ph. D. consortium) and known a few students in the ISU Ph. D. program.

My apologies sir. I assumed all ashamed "southern californians" were Bakersfieldians. Actually Bako could be considered either south or central, perhaps.

    Best wishes on your studies.

    no appoligy needed!

You a security guard? It really suits me I like working graveyard. Basically I am paid to play on the computer all night. That how I got my BA... My last five posts have been walking distance from home.... There are disadvantages though... I have to pay matinee prices at the theatre... and order off the lunch menu instead of the dinner menu.... but I can live with that.
