I have been doing a lot of research at jonnies site and at aacsb's website but haven't been able to find a school in the USA with the criteria listed.

Does anyone know of a program that meets this criteria, which may be started in the near future?

    AACSB + RA accredited
    Distance Learning
PHD in Business with MIS or IS concentration

I know there are some foreign schools that meet this criteria but I am afraid of going overseas for an education. Well they probably won't be regionally accredited.

This one is easy. The answer is none. Foreign schools that offer this type of programs are not AACSB accredited.

With a concentration in IS it does not exist, but a general PhD in Business does outside the US.

I have been through every site of Jonnie's links, as well as EVERY school on the AACSB site. Touro is going through the process, but it will be a few years.

As I understand, Nova Southeastern is converting its DBA over to a Ph.D. Also, AACSB does not credit anything at the doctoral level. If I'm wrong on this, someone please correct me.

This is correct, however, most of the AACSB accredited schools advertise professor positions where the PhD from a AACSB accredited school is a requirement. The PhD is not accredited by the AACSB but the school is.

The good news is that if this student is looking for a PhD in IS, some schools might be able to consider you even without accreditation since some IS departments are not in the business schools. In the case of IS, AACSB is a "nice" to have but not the gold rule. I teach for a AACSB accredited MIS department and most of the professors come from Computer Science, Mathematics or IS (Non business) departments so the accreditation is not an issue.

The Nova or the NJIT PhD in IS would be worth to consider if you are looking for a good chance to land a faculty position in IS. This because there is a good indication of faculty members holding degrees from these institutions. There are also a good number of graduates from Capella teaching in MIS departments. TUI doesn't offer the PhD in MIS but perhaps might be able to supervise in the area also.

I contacted NJIT, but they indicated that there would be at least a 3 month residency.

I wanted the PHD to be in business with IS concentration so that I could teach both the Business and IS side.

I noticed that both Capella and Nova are AACSB members, but not Touro. When I called Capella, they said that they would get back to me on what timeframe they expect to be AACSB accredited. I am looking at NCU, but I think they are a ways off from becoming AACSB accredited since they just recently became RA.

Thanks to everyone for your input. If anyone has any information on new programs please post.

Has Touro started their AACSB accreditation process ?

Is there a difference between being an AACSB member and being AACSB accredited? Nova didn't seem to claim AACSB on its accreditation website:

Yes and No - A requirement of AACSB accreditation is to have a graduating class at the doctoral level. They graduated their first class in May, so they now have the opportunity to begin the process. I have spoken with AACSB officials, and "can not say if they have started the process", but Touro has said they have. Estimated time of completion 3-4 years.

Being a member says nothing about the school. If you pay the fees, you can be a member.

The other online schools referenced are well behind Touro, it seems that they will be the first completely online school to be accredited (if that happens).

I am taking the wait and see approach, because I don't want to go through the program, then have them not approved. Though, AACSB' last big conference had a section soley to discuss online classroom teaching. Times may change.

In relation to the IS side - you could go with a computer science doctorate, that does not need to be AACSB (since it is not in the Business college), but those classes are tough and if you don't have the programming background, there are major prereqs.

    Good Luck.

    Nova also requires residency.

Membership is a fee, like a club - accreditation is the real stuff!

As noted, there are no schools that meet this set of requirements.

As for this changing anytime soon - I wouldn't count on it. AACSB accreditation can take a school up to 10 years (counting pre-candidacy). Further, the economics of AACSB (at least for now) are prohibitive for DL programs.

As I've pointed out - the NSU dean has told me that AACSB isn't rocket science. However, the steps he'd have to take (such as dramatically reducing enrollment and hiring a bunch of full-time faculty), wouldn't fit the institution or the students they serve.

I'll be watching with great interest to see if any "from the ground up" DL program achieves AACSB accreditation. What I've seen so far are AACSB schools (many of them state owned and financed schools) that have added DL to supplement (but not replace) their traditional on-ground programs.

    Regards - Andy

P.S. The NSU program does require residency. I spent about 75 days in cluster and on-campus classes over 4.5 years. I loved every minute of it - and would have volunteered for twice as many! On-ground, face to face instruction has many benefits.
