Was wondering if any of our learned associates heard of Education Direct. They claim to be a distance education venue that excels in Business Mangement and the like degrees. Your thoughts and suggestions on this operation please?:(

Thomson Education Direct, National Accredited by DETC, they are ok! It may not meet everyone needs.

Is their business program worth anything? I am considering but don't know how much utility their degree may have. Do you believe they are as good as Ashworth and the like schools...
I guess once DETC accredited they all have the same utility?
    Thanks

I've received information from them for the Spanish and Accounting programs. When I called the school to talk with teachers of both programs, they were johnny-on-the-spot to make sure I got through. No hassles. whatsoever.

I've heard great things about them (you can search the archives of this site and find information), but the DETC accreditation is an issue for many. (Best thing to do is find out if our employer, prospective employer or higher educational institution will acknowledge the degree.)

The Houston branch of Education America recently changed its name to Remington College.

Education Direct is the former Harcourt which was the former ICS. Education Direct is owned by Thomson. Education America, which changed its name to Remington has no relationship to Education Direct. Education America is privately held by a group in Arkansas. Both Education Direct and Remington are Nationally accredited, the former by DETC, the latter by I believe ACICS.

Mary: I callked Education Direct and expalined that I was currently attending Ashworth which is part of PCDI. Incidentally, also accredited by DETC.
Education Dircet associate told me that they were accredited higher than Ashworth and beleive their degree has more utility. I didn't understand. DETC acreditation is all the same isn't it. I am really confused. My biggest complaint with Ashworth is you can never get ahold of anyone to assist you. Your thoughts?

Education Direct and Ashworth have the same accreditation - last I heard Ed Direct had not received other accreditations - I could be wrong. I would first ask them to share what exactly makes them "higher" than PCDI. They could simply be saying that because they have been around longer and accredited longer than PCDI. That, in my opinion, is not a basis to say they are higher or better. As to the utility of the degree, I am not in a position to comment on that. It is frustrating when you cannot reach real people. It may help if you fax something to the office of the president (PCDI) or to the president of the college (Ashworth) and then follow it up with a phone call.

    Good luck.

Educatoin direct has RA for the vocational programs, but the degree programs are DETC so the person on the phone may be refering to RA vocational corses having a better accreditation. I went through 2 of the vocational programs they were "just for fun" BOth were decent information presentation I have not tried the degree courses so I do not know if they are better or worse I woudl rate the classes I haev taken as average.

Ashworth College and Education Direct possess the same level and type of accreditation. However, unlike Ashworth College, Education Direct has had all of their college level courses successfully reviewed for transfer value by the American Council on Education. This significantly increases degree utility; thereby making Education Direct a better choice.

That being said, I believe it is unfortunate that nationally accredited schools (i.e. Education Direct) need to use this process in order to increase degree utility. The United States Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) consider all recognized institutional accreditors (national or regional) to be equal. Therefore, I can understand why some nationally accredited schools are hesitant to utilize the ACE service. I am sure Education Direct resents having to spend this money. After all, if they are already equally accredited, why should they spend extra money for ACE evaluations? Well, the reason they do it is simple; Education Direct understands that without said evaluations, students and graduates attempting to transfer will be discriminated against by academic elites.

This is extremely unfair to legitimately accredited schools such as Education Direct. The money they are spending on ACE reviews could be used to improve the overall curriculum, hire more professors, etc. Regardless, at least for now, successful ACE CREDIT reviews are of great assistance to DETC students wishing to transfer.

The discriminatory liberal academic establishment is filled with hypocrisy, and I a hopeful that our government will address the issue shortly. Think about it; DETC schools require proctored examinations, but most regionally accredited distance schools do not. In spite of this, regionally accredited distance education programs enjoy higher levels of acceptance. Why? They certainly aren’t any more difficult or strict.

I am also fairly certain that none of the lower quality regionally accredited distance education schools ‘advertised’ here have chosen to utilize the ACE CREDIT service. And even they did, I doubt they would get matching evaluations. For example, it is my opinion that many of the 4 semester hour courses I completed at a regionally accredited distance education school would only receive 1 or 2 semester hour recommendations. On the other hand, a few schools that are heavily bashed here have successfully gone through the process. In fact, all of the courses I took at a DETC school were extremely difficult, and therefore, received matching recommendations almost every time.

In any event, ACE’s CREDIT recommendations are published in the National Guide to Educational Credit for Training Programs.

I received an ICS Diploma in Private Security several years ago from its Canadian division...I wonder if that could be used for college credit at one of the "big three?"

Education Direct mentioned that their diploma courses are awarded "Continuing Education Units," however, I cannot seem to find out what value these actually have?

If you are interested in getting credit through a portfolio (pla) ceu's can be used as part of the material needed to prove your competency in the subject.

Perhaps as Tony said they can be used as part of a portfolio (I would think so). However, as they stand by themselves - they cannot be used towards credit at any of RA schools that I have looked at (to include the "Big Three").
