I am looking to become a Medical Office Assistant and I found a course at PCDI (Professional Career Development Institute) that is the "Medical and Dental Office Assistant Diploma."
This program really intrigues me because of all it is suppose to offer: medical billing, coding, terminology, office procedures and on and on. I have heard bad things about PCDI, so I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on PCDI or give me other Distant Learning schools to earn a certificate or diploma in the Medical Office Assistant field.
I am looking to the Medical Office Asst to get my foot in the door somewhere and then decide where I want to go from there, such as a coder, or nurse, or whatever.
    Thanks!!!!!

    vocational school

Hello, Our county vocational school offers this type of course at night. Would that be an option for you? I would also check your local community college and hospitols that offer CNA courses. Hille

    RE: vocational school

Night school is not an option for me. The only option for me is online or home study. I work about an hour away from home and I take a ferry across the river to my home which closes every night at 9pm. Outrageous I know, who take a Ferry?!

Anyway, online is really the only option I have because I have to work full time to pay bills and take care of my 2 kids and husband.

CNA is a Nursing Assistant and this is a Medical and Dental Office Assistant program that I am interested in. More of the office administrative work.

some ideas and one apparent scam

I can give you some information I hope will help you. I see that you noted that you live in Illinois.

Parkland college has many online opportunities and as a state resident the tuition would be cheaper.
    http://online.parkland.cc.il.us/ilearning/ilearning.html
Parkland is regionally accredited. They have many health related programs, I do not see medical office or medical assisting, but you should be able to find a program such as medical records; I do see a totally online veterinary technology program. They also have an AAS in business management into which you could incorporate medical office type electives such as medical records.

Many Illinois opportunities are listed at this web site:
    http://www.ivc.illinois.edu/CoursesPrograms/programs.asp

The state of Illinois Board of Higher Education did return some off campus programs for Medical Assistants when I searched at:

    http://www.ibhe.state.il.us/ProgInv/SchoolResults1.asp?SID1=&school=&sector=&subject=&program=Medical+Assistant&levels=&region=&keyword=&sp_tocall=1

There is a program at http://www.medassistant.org/index.html that claims to be fully accredited. I am not sure by whom but I have mailed them to find out. Being an RN, this seems OK to me at first glance. However medical assisting will require some hands on training in things such as veinupuncture and vital signs measurement. The price seems reasonable enough, but I would enquire of a local physician if he would hire such a graduate. ( this place is about 30 minutes south of me I may drop by to find out more.)
Well, actually I now hold the opinion that this place would be a waste of money. I just checked the list of licensed institutions in Florida at http://www.firn.edu/doe/cie/institutions.htm and it does not exist on the 4/23/03 list, I checked for a Florida corporation by that name and none exists at www.sunbiz.org, there is no Mark ( or M ) Stout licensed as a physicain in Florida at http://www.doh.state.fl.us/IRM00PRAES/PRASLIST.ASP. Actually none of the physicians and registered nurses I checked listed on the faculty page were licensed in Florida. The accreditation comes from http://www.interfaithedu.org/ which seems like nonsense to me.
I will have to complain to the state about this one. The whois search does come back to a Mark Stout but in Tom's River NJ. http://whois.melbourneit.com.au/index.php3?whois=medassistant&extension=org&mlcomlanguageid=&x=17&y=10 However there is no physician Mark Stout licensed in NJ either.

Sorry for the long post. But try those first two and see if that helps. Then drop in for more help if you need it.

    Best of luck !

    Medical Assisting

You may want to look at Mountain State University in West Virginia. Their Medical Assisting program is CAAHEP approved.
    Good luck

Did you check Thomson Education Direct? I took a course with them, I never had to call them for anything so I won't have any feedback in reference they respond to questions, Also you can take exam onlines too.

    Hope this help.
