    Just wanted to apologize for the downtime.

    We've got a couple of new things brewing that involve setting up integration with the forum database, and the SQL server that runs the forum's database backend got flummoxed, causing intermittent errors.

    I had to take the database offline to rebuild the database indexes and make a new backup, and then we ran into some hardware issues that created additional problems.

    All is fixed and we should be good to go now.

    Re: Re: Maintenance downtime

    Yes, well.... it's what in the industry is known as "unscheduled maintenance".... the SQL server, for no apparent reason, started generating lots of errors. It may be a function of the servers getting close to capacity... because the servers haven't been quite as stable in the past couple of days. So we really didn't have any choice but to take it offline to rebuild the database indexes and back it up... ordinarily, I'd much prefer to do so with advance notice, but computer hardware doesn't always work on a desirable schedule. (It was about 4AM when I finished my part of the work, and another few hours for the backup files and rebuild to finish...)

    The popularity of our forum has meant increased traffic; when we started, DegreeInfo was on a shared server with about 70 other sites. Now, it is currently served from two different servers, and will be moving to new, faster ones before long)... and we think that everyone will be really pleased with some of the new stuff that's coming up later this month :)

    I appreciate the wonderful service you are providing and are aware of the enormous challenges.

    The problem is that this forum is addictive and because each of the five or so times per day that I visit it it is there for me. That means I do not get down to thinking about the people toiling behind the scenes.

    Regards,

    I never realized how much I go on this forum until it was down! I caught my self checking to see if it was up numerous times :D

    If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
    But make allowance for their doubting too,
    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
    Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
    And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

    If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
    If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
    If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
    And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

    If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breath a word about your loss;
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
    And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
    If all men count with you, but none too much,
    If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
    Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
    And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!
