My Pastor's wife has a degree from an unaccredited Bible College. At least it is not RA. BUT i think it is AABC which is to some people something. :) (ME TOO)

She is wanting to go to our local university to get elementary education certification. They told her (an advisor) that she had to have RA degree.

    ANY suggestions?

Is her degree an AA, Bachelors or? It would seem the big three (Excelsior, COSC, and TESC) would be perfect for her. If she already has the knowledge, 3 months and about $3k will give her the RA degree.

she does already have a Bachelors. It is a bachelors in bible with concentration in deaf ministry.

so you think that portfolio credit would be her best bet?

    exams vs portfolios

She should also seriously look at Western Governors' University. She'd have to get first the Associate of Arts and then the BA in Interdisciplinary Studies with Teacher Licensure.

Whether to claim most of the credits through exams or portfolio will be the major decision that will affect which school she should enroll in. If she's good at exams, exams will be faster than portfolios. She should go to a bookstore, and look at the test preparation books for CLEP and GRE, and gauge how well she'd do on the tests. Then she should search Thomas Edison State College's portfolio bank and see if she can find appropriate courses to challenge by portfolio.

If she decides to go the portfolio route, she should consider taking the telecourse "Experience Based Education 100: Prior Learning Portfolio Development" from Sinclair Community College. This will not only teach her all about how to write portfoliois, but is worth 3 quarter-hours (2 semester-hours) of credit in itself!

    Thanks for the help

Thanks Dave and Mark!!! I appreciate the posts. I had originally thought that a place like Judson College which will evaluate non-accredited work would be a possibility. Maybe that still is an option....i don't know. I am just trying to round up all the options.

I don't think that she is good at test taking, at least that is what she says. So, i guess I am looking at others possibilities.

An AABC degree is accredited by a recognized accreditor and is therefroe by definition an accredited degree. The problem is that many RA schools only accept RA (some say competition issues, etc). Some RA schools are beginning to accept NA accredited degrees.

If I were your pastors wife I would look at her options. Does she really need to go the local university? This is not my field but as I understand it there are now a number of DL options for education degrees. One of the more expensive is U of P (on line) certification program and I believe someone posted they will consider NA accredited degrees.

I would also look at other options such as a Liberty University http://www.liberty.edu Masters in Education or ORU http://www.oru.edu . Both would probably consider the NA degree. I believe both have varying degrees of DL.

    T. Nixon has written a book on DL education degrees available at Barnes & Noble.

    Good luck.

    Thanks North!!

I will keep the search up for her. I did tell her that she might be able to contact the dean of acedemic affairs and get him on herside to make an exception. MAYBE, it is one of those exceptions that Dr. Bear writes about.
