I have taken a few courses in M.A. program in psychology from SCUPS. The courses seem fairly good. I am taking them in my retirement. However, I am curious about the illegality of the program in New Jersey since many posts over last few months have mentioned State Approved schools. I am just curious if any students have taken courses from Scups from New Jersey and if anybody has had luck(or bad luck) regarding employment from this institution.

    Thanks,

    DMD

I apologize for butting in. However, might I also suggest you check with New Jersey authorities? In addition to your inquiries here, of course.

Oh, and might I also suggest one of the myriad of accredited schools offering master's degrees in your area, whose degrees will not make such inquiries a necessity?

Good points Rich. There are a number of far more effective Masters degrees that will not raise these issues.

Donald, I can tell you that only RA degrees (or evaluated foreign equivalents) are acceptable for admission to state civil service examinations administered by the NJ Department of Personnel. So, if you were planning on using your SCUPS degree to gain admission to a civil service examination for NJ state employment, it won't work.

In addition, I believe most NJ licensing boards will only accept degrees from RA (or evaluated foreign equivalents) for state licensing.

So, when you ask if the SCUPS degree would be legal in New Jersey, I think it all depends on how you intend to use it.

For employment as a Psychologist or Professional Counselor in NJ, only regionally accredited degrees are acceptable for licensure. If one is taking courses in retirement with the objective of finding employment opportunities it would seem to be a good idea to maximize one's viability by completing coursework from a regionally accredited psychology/counseling program.
