Should there be Memory retention tests in MBA programs (both DL and B&M)? (like in Liberty, UNA, St leo and many others). I think a student can learn more by doing research. Research oriented programs like Touro and NCU adds more value. Any thoughts?

I completely agree that memory retention type tests at the MBA level are not realistic and do not insure as much learning as writing papers and essays.

Studying for a test and studying to learn are completely different tasks.

Some MBA students, however, are going for licensure in CPA or CFA programs, which require memorization, so those types of courses (finance and accounting) don't really have much choice if they want their students prepared for that challenge.

So you are saying that at St Leo's you do not feel as if you are learning all that you should because you are being asked to memorize? Do you have any research at St Leo's or is it limited.

Very little research. All i need to do is to study the chapters write answers to case study questions and write two 3 hr tests. I wrote a test yesterday and almost 98% of it required memory retention !

Back when I got my MBA there was a choice, final comphrensive exam or a thesis. Not wishing to cram for a final final, I did the thesis which I thought was a lot easier.

I am considering St Leo's for my MBA . Can you please explain the testing process. What is "write test" ? How are the case studies and test administered and submitted.

I would have to agree. A thesis or final "capstone" project makes more sense than memory retention tests. I wrote a policy paper as part of my MBA program. Funny thing.....I can remember the contents of my project 7 years later. If I had to write a finance or management science exam today, I would probably have to take the course again otherwise I would fail the exam.

I completed my MBA via Regis University. The program doesn't require any memory retention tests. It is entirely comprised of research and paper writing.
