Greetings everybody!! I have a question I hope that somebody will help me settle in my mind. I have basically chosen two different schools that I feel would be best for me. I have narrowed it down to Murray State University and Empire State College.

Without going into great detail, I will highlight the schools and then present my question.

Murray State is the cheaper option. They offer contract courses where I can contract any given course that is being offered during the current semester. They do accept portfolio credits and do accept CLEPs. They also have some courses I could take via distance learning. The degree is called a Bachelor of Independant Studies (BIS). The good thing about MSU, is there a branch (small) about 1 hour away from where I live. I would be able to meet with my advisor if I needed to although, i will never be able to take classes there due to scheduling.

Empire State College is by far more flexible. They have more ways to earn credit, and more courses to choose from. They accept all forms of examinations. They have Guided Independant Study option where (if I am not mistaken) I will be able to more customize my degree, or at least I feel like I will.

    ****************************************************

    Questions:

    1) Should it matter to me that MSU is closer to me and that I will be able to meet with my advisor?

    2) OR should I look for the more flexible route, which I need?

I feel like these programs would best help me accomplish my goals. I am a youth minister and want to be able to take classes that will help me be better and help me learn. Not necessarily religious classes. I am so STRESSED OUT  about this decision. I truly hate to make a bad decision. I would like to graduate ASAP so I can go to seminary. But I want to take classes that are of my interest and applicable.

Any help with my fears would be appreciated.

    For HIS Glory,

    Drew-

IMO it is what you feel comfortable with. I have never had a problem speaking to my advisor at ESC when ever i needed to.

What degree would you be seeking at ESC. Some degrees are totally on line which IMO is the best way to take classes. I am currently taking an Ethics class where the Professor logs on at least 3 times a week. So contact is pretty much always their when you need it. If you haven't already contact the school and speak with an advisor.

    Good Luck

    Chris,

Not really for sure what degree to look for. It is probably one of those situations where I don't want to limit myself to one degree when something else may be availible.

    Hi Drew,
I have decided to enroll at Empire State. Their program was perfect for me. Only one problem, I will need to satisfy the foreign language component. I have a hard enough time with English. :D Oh well, I always did plan on increasing my cultural breadth, this will nullify my excuses. LOL.

    Good luck,
    Tony

Well, to be honest, the more and more I look at Empire State, the more and more I see it as being the best option too. We will wait and see. I did have a question with the following statement....maybe you can tell me what it means ........

"All students who matriculate at Empire State College on or after September 1, 2002, who have previously earned fewer than 48 college credits, must satisfy the State University of New York General Education requirements."

I take it to mean that if I transfer in and I already have 48 hours, then I do not have to meet Gen. Ed. requirements...is that right???????????

Also, Chris, do you know what your diploma will say when you graduate?

    B.A.

    or

B.A. Cultural Studies (if that was your area of study)

    or

B.A. _________ (with whatever your specialized area was)

    thanks, drew

I had more than 48 credits and did not have to meet the SUNY General Education Requirements, based on that I would say you would not.

My diploma should say Bachelor of Science in Business, Management and Economics with a concentration in Accounting.

This passage on the website also states that 'it' is determinant on the NY Regents agreeing to this. So...I don't know. If this is the case, perhaps I won't get to learn another language.

I will find out shortly and will let you know.
