    Transitional Doctorate --

I just noticed that UMASS Lowell is offering a "Transitional Doctorate in Physical Therapy" online. An interesting title for a program designed to upgrade physical therepists to the doctoral level.

Apparently it's a hybrid program for recent grads that tacks on extra material to make the PT credential a doctorate; the page says all PT credentials will be docs by 2020, hence the transitional moniker.

Gee ma, lookit the Tr.D. I got at UMass!

    Or maybe a Tr.D.P.T.

My guess is it will just be a D.P.T. and the transitional is used only as a description to get students to stay the extra time!

Another example of "diplomaism" described by David Hapgood in a book by the same name. Creeping credentialism. Unfortunately, this situation is deceiving. How many people will think they're dealing with a medical doctor instead of a physical therapist?

    Nurses are next.

I agree with your guess. It provides a means for the student to decide to put in extra time to comeplete a doctorate with the incententive that it can be done online.

Nurses pursuing a doctorate appear to go the Ph.D. route but I would agree that a Nursing practioner doctorate program may be a next step.

To take Hapgood's concept farther we could also envision D. Tech programs being made available for lab technicians.

And a D.Mech for auto mechanics?

Nurses and physiotherapists cannot be allowed to become doctors. "Actually it's Doctor Smith, not Nurse Smith but I can't do that because I am not a doctor, well actually I am but I still can't do that. I will call a doctor, even though I am one myself, but a different doctor, one that treats sick people, not that I don't treat sick people, because I am a nurse but but also happen to be a doctor. Mr. Jones, Mr. Jones" 'Paging a doctor to ER' 'shuffle, shuffle'

"Dr Doe here. Why did you page me, I am a nurse, but I am also a doctor"

There are already "D.N." (Doctor of Nursing) programs, in addition to the Ph.D. programs in Nursing that are available.

I agree that it is the nurse practitioners who are likely to take this route. They already face a difficult and long master's program; it would be a short step. However, the nursing field is dominated (in a rather sexist way, IMHO) by the AMA. Physicians sit on nursing boards, but not the other way around. They might try to prevent it.

Technicians, in most cases, do not even have to be college educated; they're trained in their particular technical specialties. That's a long leap to doctoral-trained professionals. Plus, the DTECH is primarily a resarch, not "taught," degree.

No matter how you slice it, though, these fields are subject to credential inflation of the worst kind. Guess who pays?

THE MEDICAL PRACTICE OF SMITH, SMITH AND SMITH
The phone rings in the early morning hours. The receptionist answers "good morning, Smith, Smith and Smith medical clinic". The patient replies: "good morning could I speak to dr. smith"
Reception: "I'm sorry but dr. smith had a dental appointment this morning.
Patient: "Well then could I speak to dr. Smith?"
Reception: "I'm sorry but today is dr. smith's golf day"
Patient: "Well then could I speak to dr. smith!"
Reception: "Dr. smith is drs smith and smith's nurse. She won't be able to help you".

When interior design was regulated in Alberta it was under the architects. We couldn't trust those women and gay guys with setting their own standards, now could we?

In our jurisdiction, up to a certain square footage, an interior designers stamp is as good as an archtects or engineers.

A guy calls a lawyers' office. The phone is answered "Schwartz, Schwartz, Schwartz, and Schwartz. How may I direct your call?"

Caller: I'd like to talk to Mr. Schwartz, please.
Phone: I'm sorry, but he's out to lunch.
Caller: Then let me talk to Mr. Schwartz.
Phone: I'm sorry, but he's away on business.
Caller: Okay, then put Mr. Schwartz on the phone.
Phone: Sorry, but he's retired now.
Caller: Well, can I talk to Mr. Schwartz?
    Phone: Speaking! :D

Thanks for the link on the Doctor of Nursing program. Was not aware that these programs existed.

For technicians we could always up the credential ante with a D.Tech. I taught Radiation Physics in an AART program for Radiologic Technicians. The students typically earned a diploma and needed to complete their certification exam. Once in a while I would have a student from a B.S. program in rad. tech. They received the same training as the diploma techs and just added on the classroom time for the liberal arts courses. Hence, when they graduated they had a B.S. under their belt. This was done to make them better credentialed than their diploma counterparts. Nonetheless for the B.S. folks the M.Tech and D. Tech. degrees if a reality here would be designed to allow them to advance in their field and establish a whole new hierarchy in the technician realm.

    Doctor of Nursing Science

There are only a few D.N (Doctor of Nursing) programs but there are at least 30 DNSc (Doctor of Nursing Science) programs in the United States. The following schools have DNSc program: Yale, Columbia, Breyer, NYU, USD, UCLA, Illinois, FAU, Tennessee, Widener, The Catholic University, etc.

So the cat is out of the bag.... What do physicians doctors call nurse doctors? "Nurse" or "Doctor"

At his point a re-read of Player Piano by Kurt Vonnegut would be appropriate. He talks about a society where everyone has a doc.
