We talked about AACSB, but what about IACBE? Some view it as significant that Touro has this accreditation. Will it help at those smaller schools that are not AACSB, but have faculty from AACSB schools? Will it help with AACSB?

As I see it (and talking with faculty at AACSB, ACBSP and IACBE schools), there is a clear difference between the three. The later two are worthwhile for small and medium sized schools that can't muster AACSB. I see ACBSP as more rigorous than IACBE. My experience with IACBE when they came to visit a school I taught at was not very inspriing. Further, IACBE has granted accreditation to a number of schools on some unusual grounds - for example, when IACBE started out all ACBSP schools received IACBE accreditation without doing anything at all!

As for going for AACSB - doing IACBE or ACBSP won't hurt - but AACSB is in a different league.

Very good points, Andy. Today I received an e-mail that Barry University in Miami Shores, FL is now AACSB accredited. Hope Nova Southeastern will soon see the light!

    This is from their website....

"The Andreas School of Business is a candidate for accreditation by the A.A.C.S.B. (International Association for Management Education); candidacy status indicates that an institution has voluntarily
committed to participate in a program of continuous improvement and is actively progressing toward
accreditation status. Candidacy status is not accreditation and does not guarantee eventual
    accreditation."

AACSB's site does not have Barry University as accredited.

Florida Gulf Coast University that was chartered in 1993, admitted its first undergraduate students in 1997, received regional accreditation from SACS in 2000, also received full AACSB accreditation in 2003. Nova should pursue AACSB accreditation. Shown below is a list of newly accredited schools.

Ike, your reply must have been posted while I was composing mine.

I totally agree. If Nova really wants to join the big leagues they must go the AACSB route.

    Thanks

I would truly love to see Nova (and the rest of the DL crowd we talk about here) go AACSB. Why? Many of the changes that schools would have to go through to be AACSB would improve their quality.

But the economics are not favorable. Unless AACSB changes their 50% full-time expectation (not to mention research and others), you won't see a DL program like Nova, Touro, etc. go that way. Further, you are even less likely to see the for-profits - Capella, Walden, UoP, etc. - go AACSB.

Realize that AACSB accredits about 350 schools - out of 1200 or so in the US that have business programs.

I talked with the dean of NSU's business school last December and the message was clear - we can be AACSB if we want to - it isn't rocket science. But the changes we'd have to make wouldn't serve our student community.

Interestingly, I received in the mail today a flier about an upcoming AACSB sponsored conference on - you guessed it! - Distance Learning. Perhaps change will come.

    Regards - Andy

Congratulations are indeed in order, as Barry had been seeking AACSB accreditation for nine long years and had been turned down twice before.

According to Barry U they are the smallest or one of the smallest business schools to become AACSB accredited. I also believe they are the first university founded by women to become so.
