Bear's 15th. mentions that Glasgow is starting a DL master's program in philosophy this year, but I have found no information on their website. I sent an e-mail, but got no response. Does anybody have any information?

If you go to the University of Glasgow web site, you'll find a link for the GUIDE page. This is Glasgow University Initiative in Distance Education. It's here:
    http://www.gla.ac.uk/services/guide/site.html
You will find that there is no longer a reference to a Philosophy degree (unfortunately). This was briefly discussed by me in another thread quite some time ago. You can find this thread, entitled "University of Glasgow," by using the search function and the keywords Glasgow and philosophy. It would be good news to hear that I'm mistaken but I don't think that's the case.

When I made enquiries some time ago I was informed by a member of the Philosophy Department that Philosophy had been listed in the GUIDE plans without proper consultation with the department, and there were no plans for a distance learning version of the degree (which, by the way, is an MPhil - an MA at Glasgow is a first degree, i.e. the equivalent of a Bachelor's degree in England and Wales).

University of Wales Lampeter currently advertises a number of new distance learning MA programmes in Philosophy, but again enquiries revealed that only a few of them are actually running as yet. You can read about them at:

I had a wonderful experience discussing degree options with Lampeter (Wales) and they seem to have an outstanding program. I did not enroll because of costs, and cost confusion between what was stated on the Internet site and those listed in mailed materials. So be careful. If you are attracted to this small school make sure you understand the costs.

Incidentally, I am taking MA Theology courses through the Australian Catholic University: inexpensive; work intensive; outstanding material and supplies, and a wonderfully interactive Internet service. One course in Corinthian Correspondence, to say the least, is as labor intensive as can be imagined, but very, very interesting. I highly recommend this program.

Thanks for the info. I have been in contact with Wales-Lampeter, and am leaning towards their programs, but when I read Bear's 15th. I figured I should look at all the options. It looks like Glasgow is no longer one of those options.

I'll take another look at the fee schedule (I've only reviewed the printed material), so thanks for the tip.

    Lancaster MAVE

If you at all have an interest in environmental philosophy, I recommend the Lancaster (UK) program in Values and the Environment (MAVE). It covers ethics, aesthetics, phenomenology, land as community, conceptions of nature, philosophy of science, and a dissertation, all from the standpoint of the environmental and ecological issues. Moreoever, the price is very reasonable for a UK masters (2800 pounds or about $4500 for the whole program), it can be completed in 11 months, and Lancaster is consistently ranked in the top 5% of UK universities. I've had very positive experience thus far with the staff and administration who have been supportive and responsive through and through. Give it a thought and let me know if I can be of any help!
