With all of the opportunities to continue education such as online classes, telecourses, etc, I was wondering how many people have a higher level of education than they need for their current position.
I am earning a masters degree and probably a PhD after that and my position “requires an associates, bachelors prefer”.
I am continuing because I am receiving tuition assistance and I have the time.
    Thanks for feeding my curiosity.

Just curious...you are only looking for education and not knowledge...correct? because education is separate from knowledge unless you mean it in a classical sense.

I wonder what exactly is meant by "education". I suppose you mean actual degrees, vs. knowledge.

I see menger asked the same question.

Less in my case. I'm in software development, and I really need at least a bachelor's degree to keep apace with my peers. In spite of my situation, I'm still very happy as a lead developer. To move into management, however, I'll need to add a BA/BS and perhaps a MBA or MS to my resume.

Working on that BA right now...

I do mean education, which rarely has anything to do with knowledge especially in the technology industry.

I'm reminded of the old quotation from Mark Twain:
"I never let my schooling interfere with my education."

There is rarely any mystery about required qualifications for positions in business, at least in the U.S. They all usually appear in the employer's job specification. I have a senior management position at a nonprofit healthcare agency. My BA is required and my MBA is preferred. However, my DBA is excess baggage, as it is simply not in the job specification for this particular job. So to anwer your question, yes, I have a higher educational level than I presently need. And I doubt that I am unique in that regard.
