Well, it's in Berkeley, California; which queen and why Brighton are a bit unclear. The buildings on one page aren't the same as the buildings on another page. One of the students has forgotten to put her slacks on. The crotch shot of the guy standing in front of the skyscraper is, well,
...sometimes a cigar is not a cigar
and sometimes a university is not a university.

The CA BPPVE's directory has no record of it, which suggests that it might be operating illegally.

Pretty clearly it's an attempt to create confusion with the entirely legitimate Queen's University of Belfast.

That picture proves that the people running this thing aren't from Berkeley. A real Berkeley resident wouldn't bother to hide his erec... (sorry) with his brief case. (A real Berkeley resident would never carry a brief case in the first place, let alone wear a suit.)

The line I like is: The Queen's University of Brighton (QUB) is formed by reputed professionals and academics to conduct non-traditional degree programs.

That's probably true. That also tells me that the text on the website probably wasn't written by a native American-English-speaker. A local would instinctually know that using 'reputed' in that way suggests "alleged" rather than "reputable".

QUB opens the route to all adult learners who have an educational need, either for a first, masters or doctorate degree. You may become a full-time (resident) student or alternatively follow a part time program while earning a living with another pursuit.

Full-time residential? Hummm... I'm gonna be in Berkeley next week, so I think that I'll drop in at their address and see what I can see. (If nobody has beaten me to it.)

I just did a Google search for 'queens university of brighton', and got a total of four hits:

    Their own website.

Two different pages belonging to the British Association for Open Learning" (BAOL):

    http://www.baol.co.uk/memreg.htm

And Australia's ultra-prestigious International Accreditation and Recognition Council:

    http://www.iarcedu.com/directory.aspx

Repeating the search for 'queen's university of brighton' gave me 20 hits:

19 pages from their own website.

And a non-profit institutional membership in the US Distance Learning Association (USDLA):

    http://www.usdla.org/html/sponsorships/nonProfit.htm

It's interesting that both the BAOL and the USDLA seem to be a mixed bag, with both reputable schools and degree mills mixed together indiscriminately.

Bottom line: The "Queens University of Brighton" purports to be a university offering doctoral programs and full-time residential instruction. Apparently stealth technology is just as effective for universities as it is for aircraft. It's amazing how a high-powered university can manage to exist but not be mentioned by anyone, even by the local websites in its reputed hometown.

Also the choice of the name "Brighton" is a little odd. Brighton is very well-known as a seaside resort. And for that reason, it's not a name that sounds prestigious.

    But it sounds WASPy.

It certainly seems that when two degree mills disappear - e.g. london university colleges & chancery international - four more (or more) take their place.
There are a few others missing from Bear's new edition - TRINITY COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY, Spain, CANTERBURY UNIVERSITY, Cheshire, UK, ST REGIS, all countries, TRINITY INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, USA, & MIGS. (And now SUFFIELD UNIVERSITY)
In addition NZ's major DL institution should be listed in the 'accredited' section. TOPNZ has some 40,000 students and offers a wide range of DL courses, including degrees. TOPNZ employs over three hundred people on campus and some 300 off campus.
To be really up-to-date Dr Bear may have to produce twice yearly editions?:)

If the Link works 970 Alvarado Road, Berkeley CA 94705 is very nice residential part of Berkeley, up in the hills behind the Claremont Hotel. House start with 2 comma's.

Also interesting that IE wanted to download Chinese charactrers to allow the web site to display properly.

Once again the accreditation page says it all.

I phoned the number in Berkeley. It is answered "Hello." I said I was calling for the Queens University. The polite lady said that she had agreed with the university president, who is in Hong Kong, to answer calls. The Alvarado Road address is her home.

A Levicoffian question: I wonder if she turns her answering machine on at night?

No connection with a Queen, not a university, and no connection with Brighton. 3 lies in one short name. Is that a record? Of course, the Holy Roman Empire was "neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire"; but I don't think there was the same degree of deliberate deception there.

But Brighton in UK is known these days for, amongst other things, its large gay population. Hence the name "Queens" without any apostrophes seems somehow apposite.

Yes, click on the URL to see just how things change. Is this called product diversification?

The Queen's University of Brighton is back!

You can't argue with the credentials of the deans, either, although the name of the third one might raise some eyebrows:

    Professor Timothy A. Roberts
    Dean, Department of Education
    PhD., Queen’s University, Canada,
    MEd., University of Toronto, Canada

    Dr. John Maverick
    Dean, Department of Business
PhD., Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S.A.
    MBA, Heriot-Watt University, U.K.

    Dr. Randell DeMille
    Dean, Department of Engineering
    PhD., Liverpool University, U.K.

    Dr. Ildiko Kiss
    Dean, Department of Science
    PhD., University of California, Berkeley

Now it seems to have moved to Monterey Park, CA. I guess the high cost of real estate in the Bay Area was prohibitive to a school offering both in-residence and DL education. (Yes, BPPVE Enforcement has been informed.)

QUB is still active in Hong Kong and China. I think the business is run by some education providers in Hong Kong. They probably conduct taught courses in Hong Kong and China, and the programs will eventually lead to degrees awarded by QUB. I don't think QUB has any real operation in US.

I don't know whether this kind of business is legal or not in US, but I'm sure it's somewhat tricky in Hong Kong.

    QUB Present Address:
925 South Atlantic Boulevard, Monterey Park, CA
    Phone: (626) 289 0585
    Fax: (626) 289 5859

If you are still interesting in this topic, please go there have a look, and give them a phonecall as well. I would like to know what's happening now!

    More News of QUB

    Application for DETC Accreditation
The Management Committee of the university has decided to apply for DETC accreditation in 2003. This act aims to enhance the status of the university through gaining national accreditation. The QUB has been incorporated with the office of the Secretary of State in California (Incorporated Number: 2432829) to provide off-campus, off-shore distance learning courses to international students. You will be notified of the outcome of the application once it is available. Meanwhile, we will continue to seek international accreditation and to provide quality programs that meet international standards.

    Is QUB's operation legal?
Is QUB legally authorized to confer degrees?
Does the above statement mean something?
