Those online degrees (while certainly welcome) are much more expensive than UoL's traditional "exam" programs.

My understanding is that the added expense is related to the added faculty contact time. It's not clear to me if this added faculty contact will become the norm for the UofL programs, using this Classics program as a pilot. My guess is that you could discover the answer by examining their enrollment figures over the past 5-10 years. If enrollment is slipping then it may be that they felt it's time for something new. I'd bet that they're not gambling that there are a huge number of aspiring Classics scholars out there willing to pay the big bucks (or should I say "pounds") for a DL degree. They may want a pilot program that is relatively small so that if they have to shut it down someday it won't be a huge problem. Just a guess.

Brendan Fawcett of the U. of London's external programme wrote in his post announcing this new program: "Total costs are £7,560 (approx. $12,000 US)".

    Assuming a normal 120 American unit B.A., $12,000/120 = the equivalent of $100/unit.

That's very competitive, especially for a taught University of London degree. I'm definitely impressed.
