    http://www.newscientistjobs.com/scotland/news.jsp is the link to an interesting article in the New Scientist. It tells of new efforts to support academic research and scientific endeavor in Scotland under the authority of the Scottish Executive created in 1999.

    Interesting comments as to the ability of Scottish universities to capture research funds out of proportion to other universities in the UK. It also speaks of academic-industrial colloboration in which one of my alma maters, Heriot-Watt, was an early adopter.

    To bring this under the category of distance learning, a companion article accessible by link in the above-referenced article, describes the University of the Highlands and Islands, which is using electronic means to facilitate learning at many different sites.
