Are there any taught masters degrees in geography? I have googled...but have not found anything exciting. drew
The only one I ever found is the University of London: MA Geography Structure and Syllabus The MA consists of four elements: a seen three-hour written paper on 'Concepts and methodology of geography' an unseen three-hour written paper on a sub-disciplinary area related to the general field of research of the dissertation an unseen three-hour written paper dealing with recent research and studies more specifically related to the dissertation theme a dissertation of 10,000 words I can't see where the "taught" part is, but I'm sure that they will have more information. Also, it seems more "human" than physical" oriented. http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk/postgraduate/kings/geography/structure.shtml Also Brendan Fawcett, Promotions Manager for the University of London External Programme is a regular on this board. Maybe you could e-mail him. Best wishes---Jim
There are lots of B&M masters but I assume you are looking for a DL program. I have been looking myself and I found a self directed MA in environmental studies at Prescott College in Arizona. It does require occasional visits to their campus.
You might want to look at the Masters in Applied Geography (M.A.Geo) - Specialization in Geographic Education from Southwest Texas State University. They boast that they have the largest faculty of any geography department in the country. It looks like there are two courses (research design and research methods) that are only offered in residence, but they are offered together in an intensive one-month session in July, and maybe you could negotiate to take these through another school (either locally or DL). They also require 3 credits of directed research in-residence (so it's not entirely coursework-only), but maybe the residence part is open to negotiation if you live in another area. If the program interests you then you might want to e-mail them about your options for completing the program. I only knew about this program because I'm familiar with SWT's DL offerings, and I really know nothing about geography programs, but it sounds promising. A friend's father is a professor of geography at UT Austin, so if I see him I'll try to remember to ask him what he thinks of SWT's DL program. BTW, SWT may be changing its name to just "Texas State University." There is opposition from alumni, but it looks likely to happen and IMO it would make the school more attractive to prospective students.
There also are a bunch of Geographic Information Systems programs by DL. Not the same thing, I know, but try http://unigis.hud.ac.uk/uk/COURSES/Default.htm Also, University of London's Birkbeck College: http://www.bbk.ac.uk/gisconline/ And, University of Leeds: http://www.geog.leeds.ac.uk/odl/
thanks Thanks for the help. Still, I don't think it is exactly what I am looking for. I will keep searching. drew
BG-14 lists some additional options. I know nothing about these programs except that they're in "the book." U of Luton U of Melbourne U of New England UNISA U of Wales (both Lampeter and Aberystwyth) Good luck, Jack
