Greenwich appears to come down firmly on the side of aura life forces

Greenwich University has now 'gone public' with its rather dramatic changes, and, to my considerable surprise, they seem to have come down squarely on the side of alternative therapies, color meditation, aura life forces, kundalini energy, and the like.

The new president is Francesca McCartney (BS, PhD, Greenwich), also head of the Academy of Intuitive Sciences in Sausalito.

Chief Operating Officer is Michael McCartney, also on the staff of Mrs. McCartney's Academy, but also listed as the Executive Director of Greenwich's Australia Campus.

I have no problem with schools offering degrees in these areas. No, wait, I do have problems, but I'd still defend their right to do so.

But so much of the scorn and ridicule heaped on Greenwich by the press over the last few years was because of such degrees. I've already heard from three alumni who have Greenwich degrees in very traditional fields (history, political science), who are not thrilled with this stance.

One wonders if they will be doing academic degrees any more, or focus entirely on these new areas.

One also wonders where degree-granting authority comes from.

The changes and new address are given at

    Mill Valley???

Nothing personal regarding the many fine residents of Mill Valley, but it looks like GU would have tried to avoid any connection with the term MILL.

When the sawmill finally closed, it struck the town of Mill Valley hard. What would the people do? In the deathly quiet, some residents vowed that they were willing to make any kind of bargain...

Then an odd but strangely regal figure appeared from a place down under that many had dismissed as mythical. A whole new kind of mill set up shop in the valley and promised everlasting tenured mill positions for anyone who was willing to trade some little worthless thing that most would never miss.

Singing, dancing and sacrificing bleating goats at their Marin County altars, the people of Mill Valley thanked their strange divinities for the natural healing power that they believed had finally returned them to their lost feeling of wholeness.

Where they locate is not important but they still stay as un-accredited. Therefore, people will still consider as a Mill degree provider.

Umm. "Intuitive Sciences"? Isn't that an oxymoron?

Now, in the interest of being fair, I'd like to point out that both the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, as well as John F. Kennedy U, and probably, to a lesser extent, Saybrook (all regionally accredited schools) have various programs in intuitive sciences that aren't far off from what Greenwich is offering... I personally know the professor who teaches Kundalini at JFK, and he's quite a respectable guy with a legit Ph.D. from a legitimate school, and teaches from a scholarly perspective... it's not an airy-fairy course.

But I have to agree that Greenwich's past history of offering mainstream degrees does seem a bit at odds with the current model.

Not to mention, of course, the whole issue of location in California, whether the school is seeking California approval, and so forth.

Unless there's info to the contrary, I'd take this as a pretty good indication that Greenwich has given up the fight for the end-run accreditation loophole through Norfolk Island, but as to what's next... one can only wonder.

    Dr. McCartney tells me that

    (1) They are physically located in the 150-year-old original Sausalito schoolhouse at 1417 Bridgeway in Sausalito.

    (2) They are applying for state approval, and will not award any more degrees until they have it.

John Walsh of Brannagh tells me that

    (1) Very few people accepted the opportunity to transfer to any of the four regionally accredited schools that had agreed to accept Greenwich transfers.

    The website tells me that

    (1) They are still claiming to be fully accredited, using the Australian (or, more relevantly, Norfolkian) meaning of that term, which refers to self-accreditation.

Russell: But what are you telling us, John?

John: Three words: Sincere but misguided.
