When James Kirk pleaded guilty to fraud, for his fake LaSalle University, and went to federal prison, he started Edison University from his prison cell. After legal action by the real Edison, the name was changed to Acton University.

I hadn't seen evidence of Acton for a long time. Someone inquired about Ames Christian University in Florida. When I looked up their address in Google, it showed that Acton University was also at the same address.

The Acton website is almost identical to the Ames one. They say they are in the process of getting what sounds like Caribbean accreditation. The man behind both places seems to be Todd Wieland, who does not appear to have any connections to Kirk or LaSalle, but I don't really know this.

With all these "fake" efforts.. he could have started a legtimate school by this time.

He can't; he's in too deep. The name "Acton University" reflects the epic warning by Lord Acton (1834-1902): "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."

Also, he's not a real academic, but is actin' as one on the Web! :)

Todd Wieland of Ames/Acton returned my phone call and we had a pleasant talk. I am satisfied that his Acton has no connection with the Acton that Kirk started in prison. Wieland said he starts all his business ventures with the letter 'A.' He said he plans to seek accreditation for his Acton from St. Kitts or Barbados.

So it's different, but not really all that much.

Naming one's "interesting" school with the same name as a former diploma mill is, well, odd.

Sounds very promising John. Can you ask him to send on a copy of the self-study template Acton will be required to submit for MOE approval, or is this merely a business name application ;-)

    Cheers,

    George
