Are online degrees taken seriously?

I am looking to complete my BA/BS in business management and the online option is looking attractive. I do have a concern about how employers look at an online degree.

I completed the first two years of college and approx. 1 year of upper division course work towards a BA in Business, Production and Operations Management years ago. I have been working for a large manufacturing firm for the last five years in the position of Senior Mechanical/New Product Engineer. I have also held the position of Manager, Manufacturing Engineering at my previous employer for about 7 years.

Thanks in advance for any feedback

During the seven years I was involved in US/Canada marketing for the non-resident MBA of the Edinburgh Business School, we went through more than 1,000 approval processes, where potential students asked their employers to approve (and, in most cases, pay) for it. More than 98% were successful.

    Fred,
If you are concerned about obtaining a degree from a known "online school", try finding a traditional university campus that also has a large online presence that will complete your POM degree.
I did a combination of online/campus classes and upon graduation all diplomas were identical; some graduates were new faces, that was the only difference, no onliners had horns growing out of their heads. In the quality arena, I found online classes much tougher. Every class had at least two proctored exams-no open book stuff.
Although, some employeers may still hold a cloud over online education; day by day they are becoming a minority and in most cases it can be attributed to a individual in HR comparing their degree against yours (a basic degree snob) but until the rest of the world catches up, take a safe route and find that college/university that offers both without distinction!
    best,
    Gavin

According to a survey conducted by Vault.com in 2000, employers have a slightly lessened view of degrees completed online. But, as on participant noted, "How would we know?"

My own, unpublished research implies also that employers generally don't know.

My advice would be to get the degree as soon as possible. Any limitations you find--and I suspect you will find none--will be overcome by the rest of your talents and skills, along with having the degree sooner rather than later.

    Good luck!
