It appears that Athabasca University in Alberta, Canada, has received a beautiful web-site makeover! http://www.athabascau.ca (Text only option, too!) Check it out! Other distance learning outifts will be envious... Simply gorgeous. (Congratulations, Canada.) --Orson
Dear Orson: Believe it or not, my main motivation in visiting degreeinfo.com at this moment was to search its archives for a link to "Athabasca University"; I couldn't remember its name! Thanks! Cordially, Richard Kanarek P.S. Just in case it helps anyone else, I shall repeat the link: http://www.athabascau.ca/
FedEx One unusual thing I discovered about Athabasca: there is no overnight delivery there with FedEx. FedEx doesn't have an office in Athabasca, so they have to subcontract to another courier. Delivery takes at least 2 days and costs $40.
I really don't like the new layout because it's much too hard on the eyes (the background and colours are too bright; the contrast between the background and the colours is less "eye friendly" than before), and because the navigation is more cumbersome than before. Having said all of this, once you are able to find the information that you are looking for, and contact the people that you need to answer any questions that you might have, you'll find that (generally) they are very helpful and interested in seeing that you succeed it your educational endeavours. This has been my experience with AU since 1998, although YMMY. Regards, Darren. (who hopes to finish his AU degree sometime during the reign of the current monarch)
Re: FedEx Population 2,415 including 210 aboriginal, 60 Chinese, 15 South Asian and 0 other visible minorities. 18.2 % of the adult population has a university degree compared to 17.4 % for Alberta. This is considerably better than the town I work in at 12.4 % and the county I live in at 6.1 %. It's a two industry town, pulp and education. From a historical perspective it is strange to see no black population as the area was the location was one of three in Alberta settled by Oklahoma blacks around 1910. My father went to a mostly black school in one of the other areas. The existing school board boundaries seem to have been drawn around black owned farms so they started their own. The racially tolerant Canada wasn't always so.
U. S. financial aid Did AU become one of the foreign schools for which someone living in the U.S. could receive Federal financial aid? I saw mention of it somewhere then heard nothing further. Ron
Re: Re: FedEx Yes, having driven there several times from Edmonton for meetings at the university, it became readily apparent during the first couple of these trips that logging was a big part of Athabasca life--I passed logging truck after logging truck after logging truck...While this created often created a few periods of "white knuckle" driving (especially during the winter), the scenery was beautiful throughout the year.
