Just wondered if there are any fellow students attending...

Not me. UND sent far and away the snottiest response to a degree program inquiry I have ever received. Some people think their snow don't stink.

I am a former student. Lived in Grand Forks from 78-85 and became a hockey fan.

Uncle Janko, Sorry to hear you had a bad response. Must have caught someone on a bad day.

    Unk,

From which department did you receive this response?

No further comment, no claim it's typical, no respect for what they said, either.

    Almost, nearly, possibly a student

    Greetings.

My application is currently being processed, so I'm not actually a UND student yet. I thought I'd write any, as you seem to be short of replies. <g>

I must say that so far everyone has been extremely nice, although this could be because I've only really dealt with one person. <g> Then again, if they want to extract something like $600 a credit (for EE course work), and make me fly down to ND every now and again, they'd better be nice! I can get lousy treatment cheaper and closer to home! <g>

    Cordially,

    Richard,

I'm pleased to hear that you will be making trips to our grand city of Grand Forks. It also pleases me to hear someone from somewhere other than Canada or Alaska refer to flying "down to ND." It is rare for us here to be perceived as a southerly locale.

The world is a globe. Everywhere is "down" from where you are standing.

Best wishes from "up here"---Jim (who tells his kids that I had to walk 10 miles to school each day; uphill, both ways!! which is correct!!!)

    Dear Cory:

    Regarding your last post:

"I'm pleased to hear that you will be making trips to our grand
    city of Grand Forks."
Odd, my thesaurus doesn't list "grand" as a synonym for "frozen". <g>

"It also pleases me to hear someone from somewhere other
than Canada or Alaska refer to flying "down to ND."
I imagine, given your locale, you have little opportunity to
converse with people other than Canadians or Alaskans. <g>

"It is rare for us here to be perceived as a southerly locale."
Really? Although I must confess that the subject of ND seldom comes UP here, it was my impression that ND was very much like Antarctica (South Pole). <g>

Listen, I already (attempt) to check my posts for spelling and (even less successfully) grammar; I just don't have the time to start checking for geographical errors too! I warn you, don't rile me: I'm in the AF (reserves). Theoretically, somewhere I have a gun! <g>

BTW, I don't recall you describing your association with UND in detail. If you don't mind my asking, what degree program (if any) are you in, where are you located, and why did you choose UND?

Problems with UND -- other than obscene cost

    Greetings.

I have been using COSC (www.cosc.edu) as both an assessment college and as a credit bank. Regardless of whether it would further me towards my current degree goal, I assiduously forwarded every RA creditable item to COSC. I find now, however, that my work was in vain. The following is an excerpt from an email that was sent to me by a cog in the UND bureaucracy:
"Whether or not other college work is listed on your
Charter Oak State College transcript, we still require
official transcripts from each college attended or from
each college that you have taken classes through."

Question: Is this just another example of the disdain that "public" institutions have towards the public, or is wasting students time and money in this way fairly common at other universities too?

Also, UND will accept an unlimited number of UND distance study credits, and unlimited number of residential RA credits towards one of their distance degrees. They will, however, accept a limit of 30 distance RA credits from non-UND institutions. Am I wrong to suppose that this rule results from a combination of bureaucratic stupidity and unabashed avarice?

While it is increasingly unlikely that I will be a UND student -- why should I deal with this sort of cr#p and fly to ND when I can deal with the same sort of cr#p and take the subway to CUNY? -- I am incensed by it just the same. Who would one complain to about such offensive rules? Would a university have an ombudsman? Perhaps a complaint to a dean (which)? Their regional accreditor? Does ND even have a department of education <g>, and, if they did, would anyone there care?

    Richard,

I can understand what you have to say about North Dakota not exactly being a hot topic of discussion where you live. My wife, a native Virginian, said that she had rarely ever thought of ND in her lifetime prior to meeting me. During my 6 years of living in Virginia, I frequently received comments like "North Dakota [pause], isn't that near Nevada?"

In actuality, the weather here is glorious throughout the late spring, summer, and early fall months. The winters, however, can be pretty intense at times. ND tends to get a bad wrap as "the great white north." We get irritated by this wholesale misrepresentation from time to time, but also appreciate that such misconceptions help to preserve our quality of life.

I am not formally affiliated with UND in any way. However, some of my best friends are professors there. The church family I serve includes a handful of active and retired professors, and about 120 UND students. I frequently visit the coffee shop and library on campus, and attend UND sporting events.

    UND EE

Please keep us informed at to your progress. I completed an AS in Eng Sci but decided to continue my education by pursuing a BS in CIS via DL which I will complete this year. I'm now rethinking this and may want to also get a BSEE since my interests really lie in this direction. I've looked at UND with great interest as it appears to be the only ABET DL EE program around.

C'Mon Janko, you really didn't expect UND to admit you to their Ph.D. program with only 6 months of college, did you? ;)
