Out of curiosity, does anyone here know of what is the most inexpensive DL/Research type of (postgraduate) degree program at UK schools for "overseas students"?

Generally, they are very expensive for Non UK, non EU students. But, of the little research I have done on the subject, generally the universities charge the same basic range of high fees for registration/tuition.

Would university colleges or institutes (i.e., not universities) be less expensive than universities?

I'd have to guess that the University of London programs are the least expensive. Next, I'd guess would be the University of Wales programs.

Customarily, one visits the UK once a year to meet with the reader/dissertation advisor.

If there are ANY PhD's available in the UK that do not have that residency requirement, it would cut the financial cost significantly and they would probably go to the top of your list. I'm skeptical that such a thing exists, however.

Yes, it would make it cheaper if there was no airfare involved etc. But, is there university college or institute that might charge less fees than another. I think UofL might be an option for some.

    I am just curious.

    Fees at UK universities

From my experience, there is variation between universities in the UK and variation among programs within universities. Although not strictly research degrees (are you interested only research degrees?), here are some sample total program fees I've come across at various UK universities:

MA Distance Learning University of London: $13,500

MA Anthropology, University of Wales: $10, 500

MA in linguistics-related subjects, Nottingham University (a world-renowned university in this field): $7500 (same fees as home students)

MA Values and the Environment (Environmental Philosophy): $4,500 (same fees as home students).

So my point: UK doesn't necessarily mean high costs for a DL degree. In fact, in my case, it was cheaper to go the UK route.

    KKA,
It just occurred to me that you may look into : Sheffield Hallam University.

They have the least expensive DL UK degree I've come across: MA Imperialism and Culture for an extraordinarily low $3100 for overseas students. I noticed their other DL courses are fairly cheap too (i.e. MA Technical Communications for about $4500). They also have a good list of DL offerings.

John - Thanks for correcting me in this matter. As usual, I should check the facts before I post. You'd think I'd have learned by now, eh?

Yes, Sheffield Hallam University offers an MA Imperialism and Culture by distance ed (no residency) for about $5,000 Canadian (about $3,200 US.) I am doing it at this very juncture.

What is your assessment so far?

    Hi Roy,

Tell us your views, assessment of the program so far. I'd be interested in learning more about the program from the perspective of a student? Certainly, a very interesting program!

It has been asserted that one of the reasons for grade inflation lies in a link with high course fees. "What do you mean this essay has a 'C' grade. I am paying $50,000 dollars a year for this course!"
No such charge can be laid at the feet of Sheffield Hallam Universitiy's Imperialism and Culture MA. At $5,000 dollars Canadian it is to say the least on the inexpensive end of higher education, and from a respectable institution to-boot. Not only this but they are brutal with the assesment.
My first course was called 'Theories of Imperialism'. I just finished it. I did pass but there was no cigar. My final Essay for the course was panned 'and rightly so.'
Nontheless, it is a good program, and has interesting subject matter. My current course is called 'The Empire at Home: Britain, C. 1770-1840'. It is more up my street, it is social history rather than political economy, 'which was the discipline of the previous course'.
Anyway, the MA consists of four courses and a dissertation done over two years. Sheffield Hallam University has the typical attitude of British institutions; high academic expectations but a cavalier attitude to administration. However, this makes them very flexible when it comes to due dates, especially when they are about two weeks late with the course materials.
They don't seem too interested in getting the fees either. They have authorization to take the money from my credit card. It has been three months and it is still there, 'no doubt it will occur to them soon.'
The program in my view is a worthwhile endeavor, especially if you have an interest in history.
