A friend of mine just applied to Heriot-Watt's MSc program in Construction Management, and would like to hear comments from anyone who has completed or is currently enrolled as a student. Thanks.
Is your friend in the US or elsewhere? During the 7 years my company did marketing for the Heriot-Watt MBA by distance learning, we got a fair number of inquiries about other H-W distance programs, including construction management, and TESOL. The feedback I heard from nearly all inquirers was that it did not seem appropriate for people in the US, given major differences in building codes, laws, licensing, other regulations. I don't recall ever hearing from anyone who completed it in the US.
Thanks for the response John. Coming from a construction background myself, I don"t see a major problem with differences in codes, etc. because the degree seems to be more oriented towards management than engineering. Obviously there will be some irrelevant material that must be studied, but I would assume that would be the same situation with a MBA from a British university. I will, however, advise him to take a closer look before he enrolls.
If one is going to do a Heriot-Watt DL program other than the MBA, then the following looks the most interesting: http://www.bio.hw.ac.uk/icbd/html/ICBD_Distance_learning.htm
Coming from a German family, that MSc in brewing certainly caught my eye. Unfortunatly, it requires a bacheolor's in biology or engineering, otherwise I would do it for personal enrichment.
Another interesting option is the Msc in Construction Management bu Univeristy of Bath through the BC Institute of Technologu (soon to be Simon Frasier) see: http://www.construction.bcit.ca/degrees/
