I have a friend who wants an online RA MA in CJ, but he is strapped for cash, due to family obligations. He is also a full-time LEO.

Can you recommend the lowest cost online RA MAs that are available?

Let me see if I've got this straight.
m.a. - You've got an f who wants an RA MA in CJ but he's got no $ due to o(f). If it matters, he's also an LEO.
    J. - Sorry for my ignorance, but what is "CJ?" BTW, I'm a Sagitarius.

Guess I was too esoteric.

I have a friend who would like to pursue a regionally accredited Master of Arts degree in criminal justice through distance learning. He is a police officer who is strapped for cash.

With his financial constraints in mind, what, if any, are the most inexpensive programs available?

Sorry m.a. , I don't mean to be difficult. BG14 lists about a dozen Criminal Justice Masters degree programs. I wouldn't want to guess which is the cheapest. You get into all those questions about, "Does it need to be 100% non-residential?" and "Can it be a non-US university?" all of which effect the cost. I think that BG15 has just come out. I'd advise your friend to buy it and begin some research online. If he can't do that then he's not a likely candidate anyway. (sorry for being harsh...it's been a harsh day)

There are many programs available at reasonable prices... but does it have to be an MA? Will an MS do? Or an MLS (Master of Liberal Studies)?

Here's a quick rundown of the most cost-efficient programs:

Fort Hayes State University offers an MLS in Criminal Justice. The 31 credit program costs $133.50 per credit hour + books, etc.

Indiana State University offers an MA and an MS in Criminology. The 33 unit MA and the 36 unit MS cost $178 per credit hour + books, etc. (Word on this Board is that this is a tough program to get into, with a waiting list.)

There may be others that are thrifty... but these seem to be the best buys on the market. In doing research on the available programs for my officers I was pleasantly surprised to find so many graduate CJ degrees out there... amazing! I wish they were available when I did my residential MPA!

  6. Indiana State (already mentioned) is incredibly inexpensive. It's also incredibly "waitlisted," but if your friend has more time than money it might be worth the waiting.

Troy State's tuition is now $280/credit for their graduate courses. Apparently, somebody told them about free-market economics. That's still pretty competitive, though.

To add on to the information provided by Dennis Madarang, Troy State University offers an MS in Criminal Justice and an MPA in Justice Administration.

Note on links: These websites were active a month or so ago, I usually try to verify them before posting them... but for some strange reason my computer has objections to these URLs... worst case scenario... use http://www.tsu.edu
