I've always been appalled by Yahoo's distance learning section, because of the many degree-mills listed there. So it's certainly heartening to read this:

What does "accredited" mean? There are many types of accreditation available, but not all types are recognized across the United States. The U.S. Department of Education recognizes five regional bodies of standard higher education institution accreditation, for example, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Academic area of Yahoo! Education – Distance Learning only includes colleges and universities accredited by one of these standard regional bodies.

Of course there are six regional accreditors, not five. And I personally would have included other recognized accreditors as well as RA. But it's certainly a dramatic change in direction for Yahoo.

And yet of the eight "Education Providers" listed, two are not currently regionally accredited.

Western Governors' University is seeking accreditation. And Classes USA provides continuing ed and training, and only points to degree-granting institutions.

OK, now I'm becoming disturbed. I just checked the Yahoo site and the section on accreditation goes on to say:

Putting aside the issue with Western Governors', as far as Classes USA is concerned, this is absolute deception.

For example, Classes USA offers a course entitled "Accredited Graphic Design Certificate." (Yes, "Accredited" is actually in the title.) This course, which costs $1849 is offered through a partnership with Sessions.edu, which is DETC accredited!

This is fraud, or at least complete incompetence.

It's got a very long road to travel before it becomes useful.

Five business schools. Under "Humanities, all subjects, all degrees" they came up with one.
