Is it true that if an overseas University is recognized by the US Dept. of Education, a student can seek federal student loans to attend that University? Of course I am talking through DL means and not actually attending the University in person. If this is not the case what other means are their to fund your education for attending such a school?

Federal Aid for DL Foreign Programs

    Hi Duff,

You can check if your school has a financial aid arrangement with the DOE:

    http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/fotw0203/fslookup.htm

If your school does have a code, you can receive federal Stafford loans ($18,500 max including about $10,000 subsidized and $8,500 unsubsidized).

As a supplement to the Stafford, I know of the ISLP (International Student Loan Program) offered through teri.org. It parallels the Stafford in terms of repayment structure, interest rates, and maximum loan amount.

I was able to receive Stafford loans for my DL Lancaster-U.K. graduate degree (100% non-residential). DL was never an issue in applying but make sure to contact someone at your school first, preferrably someone with experience completing US loan forms, and alert him/her that such and such documents will be coming along. Otherwise, your forms may sit there until someone feels compelled to figure them out on your behalf.

Other than these federal loans, there is a host of private loan programs with less favorable interest and repayment rates. There are many options out there.

    Good luck.

    John:

Thanks so much. I thought the only way to get a non-USA DL degree was to pay for it out of your pocket. This really helps!!

You've got a large and interesting compilation there!
(Although I wonder if you've slighted the grad science offerings some...?)

    Stafford Loans

Just a note to say that EBS has just received approval by the US DoE for its US MBA students to receive Stafford Loans if they qualify.

Coincidently with your enquiry, I am in the process of setting up the administration policies for Stafford Loans at EBS. They are fairly common in UK universities.
