Pics of Cal Coast or Columbia Pacific?

    Hello everyone,

I am interested in knowing if any of you have any photos or pics of Columbia Pacific University and Cal State University.

No, I am not interested in registering classes from them as they are unaccredited, but I have developed somewhat of an uncanny interest in their location and history. Both appear to have been established in the '70s, and I just wonder if they still occupy the same old buildings, particularly Cal Coast.

    Thanks and any comments appreciated.

Columbia Pacific hasn't been in operation for two years (December, 2000). In December of 2000 CPU lost its appeals against the state which was attempting to close down the institution, based on what CPU alleged were suspicious "findings" from a re-approval site visit carried out in 1995. For years, CPU did have its own building in San Rafael, California. I have pictures of the building in my many CPU files (a number of files were turned over to me as I was researching CPU's situation with the site visit findings, having to close, their appeals, etc.). That building was sold in 1998.

One of the two CPU owners started Columbia Commonwealth in 2001, initially in Montana. The other CPU owner retired. After consultations with me (I tend to be a strong voice for the needs of CPU's alumni) CCWU centralized its operation to Wyoming, which landed it in the accreditation territory of the North Central Association.

The NCA has been the most friendly over the years to non-traditional institutions. I advised Les Carr (president of CCWU and former Dean of Faculty for CPU) to locate to a place where there is a friendly accreditor (WASC, accrediting California schools, was not friendly to distance ed and CPU could not achieve accreditation there without trying to get WASC to accredit non-residential schools). At the time I made my recommendation NCA's website information indicated it was exploring possibilities for accrediting non-residential programs.

My thinking at the time of making my recommendation to Carr to centralize programs in Wyoming, was that CCWU alumni should never find themselves in the situation that CPU alumni found themselves in after CPU lost its appeals. CPU alumni are now organizing toward suing the State of California for damages.

Incidently, CCWU is now looking to purchase a building somewhere in Wyoming. According to Carr, CCWU hopes to have some short residency for some of its programs.

    Hi again Sulla,
You mentioned you were interested in the history of CPU. I did extensive research on this topic (based primarily on documents).
You can read my rendering at www.altcpualumni.org
Look under the the section titled "The CPU Chronicles - 1978-2000). The relevant documentation is also posted on that site. Happy reading!

By "Cal State" you must mean California Coast University (as is inferred later in your post.)

I've seen pictures of CPU's old location in its literature. I believe one of its centers was wholly owned by Les Carr, providing him some tax benefits when dedicated to use by CPU. (IIRC, Bear reported this.) Anyway, it didn't seem like any big deal.

CCU occupies a drab former bank building. IIRC, it was painted dark blue when I saw it in 1982.

These seem rather unremarkable things to seek out. Good luck.

    Yeah, I know it isn't what you mean't, but I couldn't resist.

  7. Sulla,
Will do, but this will take some time as I will have to go thru my CPU fileboxes, find a photo, do a scan, etc.
