Could someone recommend to me a few study resources to prepare for the following Excelsior examination: Ethics: Theory & Practice; Foundations of Gerontology; Psychology of Adulthood & Aging; World Population. Also i'll take DANTES test for Civil War and Reconstruction. Most books they recommend are pretty expensive, being around $100 each. Thank you, Maggie
Maggie - I posted my experience with the Ethics exam in this thread. For material to study for the World Population exam, look here. I spent a few hours reading through the Population Handbook and World Population: More Than Just Numbers. I skimmed the World Population Data Sheet. I scored an "A" on this exam. I've now taken 30 exams in a little over a year and this was probably the easiest! Also, I strongly recommend that you review Lawrie Miller's excellent website here. Pay particular attention to the section on study materials, especially this page. Finally, if you do decide to buy a textbook, look for a used copy through www.half.com, www.bookfinder.com or do a search at www.google.com. All the best, Mayer
mayerz - Thanks for your infomation. Have you taken these two ECE EXAMS: Organizational Behavior and Psychology of Adulthood and Aging? The books recommended on BA in 4 Weeks website Princeton Review GRE Psych, and Barron's Business Lib Human Resources, I couldn't find them. Thanks, maggie
Hi, I took most of those tests and I simply went to the used book store and bought several college textbooks for about $2 each, then I compared the study guides to the textbook chapters, studied them and took the test! Hope it helps!
Dantes tests Hello Maggie, Have you downloaded the study guide for your Dantes test at http://www.getcollegecredit.com/materials.htm? You will find a link for fact sheets in the right-hand column. Each fact sheet provides an outline for testable knowledge, sample questions, and a recommended reading list. You would do well to take that list to a used bookstore in your local area or check for used books at Amazon.com. Good luck! Steven King
I must confess: I am a biblioholic. I love books. For World Pop, I bought the Weeks text used $5 or $10 at half.com for an earlier edition and read parts of it, skimmed others, and skipped a few chapters; I'm also interested in the subject from my wide-ranging reading. Yes. It's not difficult. It's perhaps the best ECE to start with. But I also found my pre-exam reading gratifying. You, too, might enjoy it! --Orson
Maggie - For Organizational Behavior I used the Princeton Review GRE Psych book, the DSST: The Official Test-Preparation Guide and I read a chapter or so from a Introductory Business textbook I borrowed from a friend. Psychology of Adulthood and Aging is a subject I was really interested in. Therefore, I bought a used copy of the book Adult Development and Aging by John C. Cavanaugh for about $20- and read a few chapters. I scored an "A" on both these exams. Mayer
Orson - Since my goal is to merely obtain a credential that will allow me to enter graduate school, for most exams I've looked for review books or materials that would give me the best grade with the least effort. However, I totally agree with you. For the subjects that interest me, I've invested time in reading and furthering my knowledge. I've also made a few mental notes of subjects I'd like to explore further after I get my degree. All the best, Mayer
DSST Civil War exam You only need one book to pass the Civil War & Reconstruction Exam, "Battle Cry of Freedom", currently available on half.com for $10 or less. I read the book over about 4 days, and scored high enough to get an 'A' from Excelsior.
Battle Cry of Freedom Wow, and it's upper-level credit, too! I found 2 books with that title. Do you mean Battle Cry of Freedom: the Era of the Civil War by James M. McPherson (Oxford University Press, 1988), or Battle Cry of Freedom: The United States 1848-1877 by H. Jeremy Packard (Longman, 1983)?
Thanks for your infomation. I'm taking another DANTES test for Rise and fall of Soviet Union soon. Any suggestions for study materials? Thanks, Maggie
