International Catholic University http://icu.catholicity.com is offering a distance M.A. in Philosophy that is granted by the Holy Apostles College and Seminary. This college is "being accredited with the New England Association of Colleges and Universities, a non-governmental, nationally recognized accrediting association. It makes the International Catholic University courses available for graduate credit",the website states. How is this accrediting association (New England Association of Colleges and Universities) looked upon in the workplace? It states there that they are "being accredited",so I am wondering about their status too.Is the degree useful? Thanks.
New England Association - as good as it gets - one of the regional accreditors. The school looks to be already accredited - Holy Apostles that is http://www.neasc.org/pssct.htm
Holy Apostles DL Philosophy Hello, Nice find. Thanks. This philosophy program looks great - I've been looking for DL philosophy graduate programs myself for some time now. This one has a strong curriculum and, at $6600 for the whole 30-credit program, not a bad deal, even without financial aid available now. It appears that Holy Apostles College and Seminary, which would actually issue the degree, is accredited by New England Association of Schools and Colleges: http://www.neasc.org/pssct.htm Nonetheless, the ICU website states "Holy Apostles College and Seminary is in the process of seeking accreditation for the Distance Learning Program, and has achieved licensure, i.e., the final step before accreditation. (Direct inquiries to [email protected].)." So the college issuing the degree is accredited, but the degree itself needs to receive accreditation? This I don't fully understand. John P.S. If you're searching for DL graduate philosophy programs, search the forum for University of Wales, Lampeter (if you haven't already). They have some solid masters programs by coursework, though not as broad as Holy Apostles' program.
Warning, warning--pompous clergy alert! Catholic clerics who use the word "athwart" are just like Lutheran clerics who begin sentences with "yes, for". Don't say you weren't warned, buster! Seriously, the program looks good if you can get them to clear up the details of the connection between the two schools and the program-accreditation question. McInerny is distinguished, if he's representative of the faculty.
So...would this be construed as one of those non-masters masters because of the lack of prerequisites? If it has more transparency I would be interested. Tony
Lack of prerequisites Hello, Just curious...what do you mean by a non-masters masters? So, if a masters degree requires prerequisite courses, it is somehow more substantial than one without prereqs? I don't really understand the debate there. Thanks, John
We can add this to the plethora of MA's in phil now available via DL @ University of Wales~Lampeter. ! Chris
Re: Lack of prerequisites Without picking sides, the debate is over the depth of knowledge gained. The argument is that a masters with prereqs (ie. a philosophy masters that requires a bachelors in philosophy with a language requirement) can achieve more depth than a masters degree starting from scratch. Ceteris paribus, I think it is hard to disagree with that argument. Tony
MA in Theology - DL Hello, I just received an e-mail that stated they also offer a MA in Theology. Sorry if this is old information. Hille
I'm assuming that the Ralph McInerny who started this deal at Holy Apostles is the same guy who works at Notre Dame... http://www.nd.edu/Departments/Maritain/cvrm0.htm I'll leave it up to Uncle J to say just how pompous he might be. Jack
Do you guys have an irony deficiency or what? Yes, I think the program looks worthwhile, yes, for McInerny is impressive and Holy Apostles is accredited. As a former university instructor in Latin, I hope this program stands athwart our downward path away from Latinity. Now, go and sin no more.
