    Hello,
This is a general question to the DL community. I've been searching for a distance learning PhD (research) program in Sociology. I've been having some difficulty finding a GAAP/RS school that offers research programs in migration/demography studies.
I have applied to Deakin U. in Australia, but their program social studies doesn't directly on demography. Does anyone know of a school (DL, UK or SA) that does research on migration and/or demography?
    Much appreciated.

The University of South Africa offers a demography concentration as part of its undergraduate program, which indicates that doctoral-level demography research could probably be supervised. I'm fairly confident that sociology is one of those fields that UNISA actually awards a Ph.D. for, as opposed to the more humanities-oriented D.Litt. et Phil.

    Good luck!

There are a few, but certyainly not many.

And of what there are, many are of uncertain quality. However the pick of the liter is, obviously, the University of London's

"M.Sc/PG Dip in Managing Rural Change
Research Areas:Management in rural development; NGO management; Project planning and management; Rural development; Social development; Agricultural policy in OECD countries; Agricultural trade and policy; Economic concepts; Economics of water resources; Gender issues in agrarian development; Organizational behavior and human resource management; Political economy of public policy; Rural change in economies in transition I; Rural change in economies in transition II; Socio-economics of peasants livelihoods; Socioeconomic research methods in rural development; Trade, development and the environment; Research Report"

However, close as some of these topics come, I doubt this can satisfy your interests in demography and immigration. Perhaps the University of Southern Queensland--described and linked there--will prove different?

Hi Roy - Very interesting subjects IMHO. I have two basic suggestions. The first is that you check in with ALL the SA universities, regardless of whether they have a reputation for DL. It has been my experience that some Dept. heads are willing to support a DL research PhD if they are approached in the proper manner. Please feel free to PM me if you'd like to talk about this aspect in more detail. My second suggestion is that you broaden your search a bit. What I mean specifically is that you might consider the field that is generally known as "Development Studies." It seems to me that demography/migration would fit nicely into that category, just as it would into sociology. After all, sociology and development are so close they're not even cousins, they're more like siblings.
Your goal is quite attainable, it just requires more "legwork" than if you were seeking an MBA. Keep at it.
