My wife has a B.A. in History Education. She wants to pursue a Masters in History then maybe a Ph.D. I have already did a search on the site and have not found exactly what we are looking for. Here is our questions:

    1) What South African Schools offer a distance masters (research or taught) and or Ph.D. in History that is not geared towards South African History. She would want to do her research in Native Americans in US History, Civil War Life, WWII, Certain Presidents, or something of that nature.

2)Same question as above only in Australia. :)

***We are looking more for cost efficiency.

From what I found, most of the S.A. institutions are with emphasis on SA history. :(

    3) I was also wondering what is the total cost of a Masters degree at Charlse Stuart. I have such a hard time figuring those things out.

    Thanks ahead of time,

Drew (and his wonderful wife, Resa)

    Mirth aside...

I doubt that SA schools will support the advanced study of US history topics; better luck down under, since their expertise is in Africa, Europe, and fomer younger colonies.
(Just based on my inspection of UNISA faculty bios ten or so years ago.)

Have you thought about the various MA programs that allow you to put together your own studies. In th development of the degree plan focused studies in history, based on your interest, could be developed. In consulttion with your advisor you could also design the degree plan to make it attractive for later Ph.D. studies in the field.

I did my MA in historical astronomy and combined coursework, faculty tutorials in a broad range of history of astronomy topics ranging from the ancient to the modern and coupled this with a graduate course in research methods. This culminated in a thesis. My degree committe consisted of both scientists and historians.

    Some individualized master programs are:

Try MLS etc degrees as listed in Jonnie's Distance Learning Page.

These may not be the best to take if a PhD is the ultimate goal. Probably many DL programs would consider it sufficient.

There seems to be few MA distance programs in history.

    Another alternative

While the South African, UK, and Australian programs are generally less costly than US programs, they do tend to focus on thier own culture and history.

One program in the US that might fit your wifes goals is at CSU Dominguez Hills in particular there MA -HUX program. Cost around $5000.
