    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1/16/03
Register Today for the Distance Learning Virtual Conference

Registration is open for the NC Distance Learning Alliance Conference 2003, a free, virtual conference to be held over the Internet and the North Carolina Information Highway (NCIH) January 21-30, 2003. Distance learning professionals are invited to register by clicking on the registration button at the conference Web site at www.dlalliance.org. There is no charge for attendance and no travel costs, so don’t miss this opportunity to attend a first-of-its-kind conference in distance learning!

John Bailey, the U.S. Department of Education’s director of educational technology, will kick off the conference with an opening keynote at 3:40 p.m. (Eastern Time) Jan. 21. As former director of educational technology for the state of Pennsylvania, Bailey was one of the chief designers of Governor Tom Ridge’s internationally recognized Link-to-Learn initiative. This five-year, $200-million initiative pioneered the innovative approach of community-based networking to ensure that communities benefit from the technology investments made in education. In January 1999, eSchool News selected Mr. Bailey as one of the top 30 most influential people in educational technology.

DL professionals across the state may take part in teleconferences connecting sites over the North Carolina Information Highway, but professionals from anywhere on the globe with Internet service are invited to participate in the conference through the Web site. There, from January 21 to January 30, 2003, you can point and click your way to learning about the latest in distance-learning concepts, technology and services.

Blackboard Learning and Community Portal Systems™ (Release 6) will drive the Internet interface for the conference, which will bring together two keynotes, 23 educational workshops, a virtual exhibit hall and many other interactive features—all presented on the Web via Blackboard at www.dlalliance.org.

For more information on all the presentations in the conference program, click on the workshop and keynote buttons at www.dlalliance.org.

Instructions on how to log into the online presentations and how to view videoconferences on the North Carolina Information Highway live-streamed via the Web site will be e-mailed to you after registration.
