Any advice on dealing with UMass Lowell?

I've been trying to get THEM to get things together for the last seven months. I've been informed (verbally) that I have been accepted to their BLS program, and even advised as to which classes to begin with. However, I just cannot seem to get them to take action when it comes to processing my paperwork so that the nice lady from Financial Aid who is becoming my best pal can get her share of the paperwork done so I can enroll! (whew, run-on sentences wear me out!)

Are there any secret phone numbers, magic words, or spells that can be cast to get these people going? Has anyone else had this sort of difficulty with UML?

I earned my M.A. at UML through the off-campus (residential) program, but I do have a bit of experience dealing with their red tape.

If the online program is administered through Continuing Education (which I believe it is), try calling the Dean of CE, Jacqueline Maloney. She was great about promptly returning my phone calls, and proved extremely helpful in getting things moving. You can get her by calling the CE Office, but if you have a problem, send me a PM and I'll pass on her direct number.

    Hi Suse,

First, I'd like to compement you on your choice of schools. I'm two courses shy of the online BS in IS and UML has been a terrific place to study. The one fly I found in the ointment was, as you're experiencing, getting started. Thereafter, things went seamlessly. Steve Tello has been my Good Shepherd and if Bruce's contact isn't available I'd give him a call. In the end, UML was extremely generous in accepting coursework from other schools.

Thank you both so much for your help!

I called Steve Tello, and he worked wonders - they managed to get everything done that needed to be done in TWO DAYS. It sure helps to know people who know people!

    Thanks again,
    Melissa

I am starting the application process today actually!! Any advice, Melissa, Bruce, David? The advisors I've talked to seem bothered when I call and ask questions.

    'Buff,

Applying to UML was nowhere near as seamless as it was for me to apply to UMUC. On the other hand, it was worth the effort. I can only echo my above advice which is if you hit a snag contact Dr. Tello.

Just let my experience be a lesson to you; don't allow life to get in the way of your keeping after them to make sure things are done.

If your application hasn't made any progress in a month or two (depending on when you want to start classes), then call David's contact, or Bruce's.

I read an article yesterday (can't think of the link) that says there is about to be a shake-up at the UMass campuses across the state. I'll go back and find the link later today and post it if it looks like it might affect anyone in the DL programs.

I read one as well... it seems the Dean is probably going to step down, and they are going to combine some of the schools IIRC. I didn't get from the article that it will affect us online folks but you never know. Hope not! :(

I know this board is old but I had some questions. First, any more news on the article that was linked back in March regarding the merger?

Second anyone have comments about the IT courses at UMAS?

Did Suse finally get in?

I took a Java programming course from UMass Lowell. It was good.

Got in, after contacting the above-mentioned people, and am getting ready to start my second semester there. But it's the Liberal Studies program, so I don't have any IT course experience to discuss, sorry.

Have heard nothing else about the merger, either.

Or just, Excelsior! (i.e. Latin for Ever Upward).
