The Centre for Labour Market Studies at the University of Leicester in the UK has announced the start of the new Doctor of Social Science degree by distance learning. If this programme is as half as successful as their master's degree programems it will take academia by storm. Details from Dr John Good win: Email: [email protected] Concentrations are: workplace learning, gender, society and work, globalisation, most HRM areas, education, knowledge management, education systems, etc. I can see why they dropped DETC accreditation of the master's level programmes! They've put their money into something with far greater potential! 'telfax'
I don't see any reference to doctoral programs on the CLMS website. Is there a reference (besides sending someone an e-mail) that substantiates these developments?
Website Univetsity of Leicester web site mentions the degree and what must be a £5,000 adverstisement in today's 'The Guardian' national newspaper heralds the advent of the programme! 'telfax'
Doctor of Social Science Rick, here's a link to that program. It is in page 43 of this pdf document http://www.le.ac.uk/ua/ac/Regs/DLRegs0102.pdf
Good evening! Updated information on DL-based programs from the Centre for Labour Market Studies at Leicester University (including the doctorate in social sciences) can be found at http://www.clms.le.ac.uk/courses/index.html on the web. CLMS staff members were very responsive to my inquiries, and the hard-copy brochure available upon request provided more detailed information on coursework and research areas.
Good evening! According to the University of Leicester Postgraduate Programme Regulations (see http://www.le.ac.uk/ua/ac/Regs/ for more information), successful completion of the DL-based doctoral program in the social sciences would result in the award of the Doctor of Social Science (D.Soc.Sci.) degree. The brochure from the Centre for Labour Market Studies noted that the more traditional Ph.D. can be earned through a program of "individual supervised research" in areas related to staff interests. I think this professional doctorate may offer an interesting balance of training in research methods, coursework modules (the taught element), and the research thesis/dissertation phase. With modules ranging from knowledge management to workplace learning, the program certainly appears to provide a unique inter-disciplinary approach to the field.
As I read it, this equals 86,000 words of writing on selected assignments. With 50,000 words being the dissertation, it's an interesting collection of requirements. With the flexibility of concentrations and coming from this particular school, it would seem easy to predict that this will become a popular program. Thanks for the link. Jack
Fees Good evening! I almost forgot to mention one of the best parts of this program. The total fee is GBP 10,500 paid in equal installments over three years. Of course, there should be additional expenses (e.g., postal costs for international delivery of modules to USA, etc.), but the expected costs should be significantly lower than many of the other doctoral programs in the UK and the US.
