    *Should a student look out for a MBA program with specialization or a general MBA?
    *Will a MBA with specialization carry more weightage (professionally and academically more value) than a general MBA?
    *Pros and cons of both.

    In a career: with, if available.

    Beginning a career, probably the same.

    Don't know what you're going to do after getting it: without.

    Really no big deal, although a specialization could help you in some areas. It probably won't hurt too much to have one in the wrong area, since it is also a generalist's degree.

    MBA in Technology Management

    A colleague of mine is interested in getting his MBA in technology management via distance learning.

    He is looking at the UoP program--and mentioned that he couldn't find any alternatives.

    Is anyone out there familiar with this program, or possibly others that are comparable or perhaps better?

    It depends!

    In the Uk the top university business schools and top blue chip companies prefer and go for the generalist MBA. The purists consider an MBA to be a generalist programme that can be adpated to any profession. The majority of 'top' business schools do not offer specialist or themed MBA programmes. In the UK, by and and large, it is the new universities (post 1992) that have engaged in offering themed MBAs - e.g. MBA in travel and tourism management, or an MBA in sports management, etc.

    I actually think an MBA should be a generalist degree with perhaps the possibility of studying one or two modules relevant to a particular profession but with the degree still remaining as a generalist postgraduate business management award.

    Thanks, but...

    I appreciate the feedback, but I believe my colleague is looking at "Technology Management" concentration, not "IT" or "IS".

    IT = Information Technology
    IS = Information science.
