Hello, Does anyone know of any inexpensive ways of earning college credit? I've seen lots of people ask for help about this but surprisingly don't see any comprehensive lists which list all the inexpensive ways of earning credit. Here are the ones that I've seen posted on this board. Anyone know of any others? It would be nice if a list was made and posted to this website or another website for future reference. FEMA: http://www.training.fema.gov/emiweb About 24 courses available through free independent study. Fredericks Community College will count each course as 1 lower division credit for a fee of $60 per credit. DigitalThink: http://www.digitalthink.com/catalog/ceus/phoenix.html Lists quite a few free and paid computer courses that University of Phoenix will accept for elective credit for a fee of $25 per course plus a $90 transaction fee. Louisiana State University: http://www.is.lsu.edu/college/courses/ Lots of inexpensive undergraduate independent study courses, priced at about $200 for a 3 credit course.
Most California Community Colleges have dirt cheap courses, $11 a credit, and many online offerings, e.g., www.foothill.edu
Don't forget out-of-state tuition is different While it's true that in-state tuition is cheap - out of state tuition rings in at: http://www.foothill.fhda.edu/reg/fees.html Non-resident Tuition Out-of-state (per unit) $94.00 Foreign citizens (per unit) $101.00 Out-of-state and eligible alien visa holders will be charged $94 per unit in addition to the basic and required enrollment fees. (EX: A, E, G, I, K, L, H1, H4, Permanent Resident, etc.) Foreign citizens with non-qualifying visas will be charged $101 per unit in addition to the basic and required enrollment fee. (EX: F, J, M, B, Others) Still might not be a bad cost if they offer specifically what you need for a degree plan. Steven King
Southwest Texas State University also offers correspondence courses, with a cost that is similar to LSU. If you're looking for courses, you might try checking Excelsior's database. If you have a local community college, they are usally very cost effective, and many of them offer DL courses.
Found another good one: BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY http://ce.byu.edu/is/site/index.dhtm $106 a credit, but the big advantage is that you can complete the web-based independent study courses in as little as two weeks if you want to. Looks good if you want to pay a relatively low amount of money for quick credits.
RE FEMA Answer Sheets Hello, I thought I would add to this post since FEMA is probably the best buy for credits if you can factor them into your degree. I have been unable to print answer sheets with the new web page. You need to request answer sheets from FEMA directly. They answered my question withing 24 hours and I imagine I will have the answer sheets by Thursday. Hille
FEMA credits evaluated at TESC Hello, While sorting paperwork I found the listing of FEMA courses that have been evaluated by TESC. These begin with the letters (IS) Courses 1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9,10,11,15,195,275,279,288,301,324,330,336,346,393,513,534,600, and 630. Note that at the time of this list 2002 IS 9 was valued at 2 credits. As stated before these courses are free so for the TESC student it is a bonus. Have a good week. Hille
