I've been using Lawrie Miller's system to pursue a Bachelor's from Excelsior. I'm looking for a short, overview type book to study for the ECE Ethics exam. On the BA in 4 Weeks site Lawrie says he used the HarperCollins Outline Ethics. A search of the HarperCollins and other book sites shows that they don't currently have such a book. Has anyone taken this test recently? If so, how did you study? Does anyone know of a short overview book that I can use to study for this exam? Thanks in advance for any suggestions, Mayer
Dear mayerz-- Ther is a copy of the HarperCollins Ethics by MvInerney available at half.com. I am yet to take this exam myself, however I must say that the course guide is concise and has more ,utiple choice questions that may prove helpful. Still-it does not have definitions in the glossary. You'll have to find them yourself. Perhaps the Encyclopedia of Applies Ethics ought to be consulted? --Orson
Orson - Thanks for the reponse. I guess I'm doing something wrong because I just went to half.com and can't find the listing you mention. Can you please give me the exact title and author name so that I can try again? Thanks, Mayer
Encyclopædia Britannica Macropaedia I spent a total of about four hours reviewing the Macropaedia article on ethics in preparation for the Ethics Theory and Practice exam. I scored a "B". I plan on utilizing Britannica Macropaedia articles to study for a few other ECE's and DSSTs sometime. My purchase of the set along with the Great Books was the classic story of a young Sailor becoming easily separated from his coin. I was thrilled to put the Britannica's to good use. They had pretty much become furniture for my bookcases. Beautiful furniture though, Royal Burgundy Edition, dedicated to President Ronald Reagan and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Mayer, Sorry--I misspelled the name: it's "McInerney, Peter". And just now, at this obscure hour, half.com is down for sys maintainence. ISBN 0064671666 Good Luck! --Orson
Orson - Thanks for the updated information. The book is currently out of print. A search of half.com, bookfinder.com, harpercollins.com and google.com does not turn up any available copies. I've pre-ordered it on Amazon in case a used copy becomes available and I'll keep searching. If anyone has a copy of this book, I'd be interested in buying it! Thanks again, Mayer
Presumably... Then I presume some onlooker in this forum beat you to it! THERE WAS but one copy avialable yesterday at half.com--at an admittedly privey $10--but it was available. Oddly enough, this does seem to be one of the least available books to have appaered in this series... Again, good luck hunting! --Orson
You could try "Teach Yourself Ethics" by Mel Thompson. At $10 it is relatively inexpensive. I'm using it myself to prepare for the DANTES exam in Ethics. here the link to the book at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0658009672/qid=1041775268/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-5783691-2318524?v=glance&s=books Good luck, Dennis
Orson - You're right that the book is practically impossible to get! While it may have been someone on the forum who bought it, it really could have been anyone. I would gladly pay $10- for the book! I guess I'll have to find some other way of studying for this exam. Thanks for your help, Mayer
Dennis - Thanks for your response. I looked at the table of contents, index and sample pages on Amazon.com and I'm not sure if this book covers the subject matter with enough depth. Please let me know how you do on your exam. If I don't find anything else, I may try this. Thanks again, Mayer
I used EC's exam guide, took every question (even those where I knew the answer) into google and selected a few sites from the google results. It took me about one hour to select the best possible sites (for me). I then studied the relevant parts of the webs, it took me maybe five hours or so, scored "A", had never taken ethics before. Thank you to all who offered advice. I took this exam today and scored an A. More details to follow later. Mayer
Sorry for the short posting earlier. I had to run out to work. I was nervous about this exam since I never previously studied Philosophy or Ethics. After searching for and not finding the HarperCollins Ethics book I got sidetracked studying for other exams. I finally got back to Ethics this week. I first read the Ethics in America review in the DSST Test-Preparation Guide which can be found here. This review seemed kind of light. I then read through all the postings about this exam on the Excelsior College student board (available only to EC students). This led me to a glossary of ethics terms at http://ethics.sandiego.edu/glossary.html and to an overview of ethics at http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/e/ethics.htm. I printed everything at those sites on Monday and spent a few hours reading them on Tuesday. I then took the exam at 10:00 AM today, Wednesday, and scored an A! Mayer
Guillermo - Thanks for your earlier posting. I was going to follow your advice but then found the other websites. Interestingly, over here, Lawrie rates this test a 3 of 5 in difficulty (reasonable effort required). I would say that our experience shows that it may be easier than that. Thanks again, Mayer
I forgot to mention another good piece of advice I gleaned on the EC board. When doing the scenario questions, I made notes on the scrap paper of each character's actions or statements. This saved me alot of time and hassle since I didn't have to switch back and forth between the exhibit and the question. Mayer
