    From their site:

    "Is Northcentral University Accredited?
On October 14-16, 2002, Northcentral University had a comprehensive evaluation by an on-site team of The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The evaluation team is recommending that Northcentral University receive initial accreditation. The review process is being continued and we anticipate knowing the final outcome by March 2003."

In other words: No, they are not accredited, yet! Be very careful.

This board introduced me to NCU - they have been approved for intial accreditation (RA), but do not have it yet, the quote below is exactly what they sent me.

TUI has a similar program, they are RA accredited, and are going for AACSB accreditaion (National).

It seems like the best bet is TUI. They have been very responsive and helpful, their program seems very informative and they have a great deal of experience with Distance learning.

I believe the following statements may provide more pertinent information to the questions asked.

"Does a PHD from Northcentral University make any sense on a long run."

This would depend on whether you believe NCU meets your current and future needs and willing to start before they receive NCA accreditation. February 2003 will be here before you know it.

"Is it any worth spending $$ on this PHD?"

This also depends on your individual situation, why you wish to get a college degree, and how you intend to use it. Over 700 people (current enrollment) are banking on the value of a degree from NCU. I'm sure at least 200-250 are doctoral learners. They just have to wait another two months to hear the results of the universities latest efforts to obtain regional accreditation. See below for more information.

"I looked at their site, but could not see who is was accredited by. Is it RA?"

NCU has been actively pursuing accreditation since it opened its doors in Prescott, AZ. In 2000, it received candidacy status with NCA. This past fall (2002) it went through a site visit and was told by the review team that they would recommend approval. In late February 2003, the NCA Governing Board will review and provide the final determination regarding approval. This is standing operating procedure for all initial RA reviews.

    Good luck with your decision.

Wait a minute Kristie - What have we determined that TUI is doing with AACSB? Are they a member? Have they begun the process of becoming AACSB accredited?

The words "going for AACSB" sound good - but how likely is that to happen? How soon?

    Regards - Andy

If final approval is given and NCA gains RA, look for another tuition increase.

I started a Ph.D with NCU a few months ago, I'm covinced I made the right choice.

Russell - You are right, not sure, worded better I should say - "TUI has stated to me that they are going for AACSB, but AACSB has not confirmed this, and they are not members - will take 1-4 years to confirm".......

    Kristie:

If your goal is to earn a doctorate degree from an AACSB-accredited school, I will advise you to forget about TUI for now. Considering the fact that TUI is yet to start the process, you may have to wait for about 8 years for them to achieve AACSB accreditation. You also have to bear in mind that they might not be successful. To apply for accreditation is one thing and to achieve accreditation is a totally different thing. I hope that you are not thinking that a doctorate from RA school that is not AACSB accredited has no utility. No. It has utility, especially when it is combined with many years of experience and some publications.

Ike - No, I don't think that RA schools are of no value. I have discussed this on many other postings, and sorry for the repetition, but it is the funding. My employer will ONLY reimburwse for AACSB, not RA. I have done the research, and there are great RA schools out there that I am considering, but will need to fund myself for.

A terrible trade study to conduct - AACSB will be free and an RA will come out of my pocket. The terrible part is finding an AACSB DL program.....

I am finding some solutions, with limited residency..... when I decide, I will post it here.

    Kristie,
What type of organization do you currently work for (school, busines, gov, etc)?

    Business - Aerospace, public organization.

They have a policy, which I don't think has been changed for YEARS, everytime I ask for rational behind some of the policies, I get the wonderful answer of "Because it has always been like that".

I took a DL class, which they said they would not reimburse, I had to take it to the VP to get it approved, but they said nowhere in the policy was reibursement for distance learning.... I am trying to pick my battles.
