    Hi everyone,
I am new to DL, just joined the forum about two weeks ago.
I need some advice as I am now considering seeking a Bachelors degree.
A little background information on myself:
I have worked in the television broadcasting industry for the past 9 years in various capacities. However prior to joining this industry I did pursue a BSc. Engineering( Civil Engineering) at an accredited university outside North America ( I live and work in Toronto, Ontario, Canada). I did 3 years of the 4 year program. I failed in my third year so I could not finish the degree. This was back in 1993. I wonder if I could transfer any credits from back then to one of the "Big Three" Colleges...and if I could then what degree should I pursue...
I would appreciate some advice on the shortest possible route to a Bachelor's degree as I would like to ultimately pursue an MBA someday.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

    Regards,

    Patrick

    Thanks

Thanks for the advice Clint. I just checked the site and found a wealth of information. Its a little disappointing that, according to the CLEP website, there is no CLEP testing centre in Toronto. I hope they set up one soon.

    Thanks again,

    Patrick

    Patrick...

So--you pursued a BSc in CE in Canada?

I'm not sure just how Excelsior or COSC handle Canadian credits--someone else here is surely more knopwledgable than I--but if it was overseas, there are outside credential evaluators that recommend credit. EC is pretty flexible in accepting their recs...perhaps a word search on "Regents College" and foreign
"credit evaluators" or "evaluations" on the Degreeinfo board would help you out! There has been discussion of these matters before.

AND have you checked out Athabasca University? Do you know how they would treat you situation, since you are in Canada--but a US citizen?--but perhaps you are especially keen to testout and complete that degree quickly instead?

    Thanks Orson and Ian,

I did pursue a BSc. Engineering (Civil Engineering) degree at the University of Dar - es - Salaam in Tanzania, East Africa. But like I said in my earlier post I failed in my third year and could not proceed to the fourth year. Thereafter, I went into the television broadcasting industry and have been in it for the past nine years.

I brought this up because I wanted to get some advice as to whether I could transfer some credits from that programme and somehow get on the shortest possible route to a BA or BS in Communications, since my aim is to ultimately pursue an MBA.

Concerning Athabasca University, I have communicated with their Communication Studies dept. and they have advised me to put together a portfolio, all school my transcripts and send them in with my application. But cost is a major factor for me, I would not be able to afford AU, unless I my application for a student loan goes through successfully.

Once again I appreciate your advice and concern

    WOW! Vey interesting, Patrick...

Dar...eh? I had a girlfriend who served in the Peace Corps, which put her in rural Tanz. We corresponded while she was there, but didn't really date until she returned to the states in the mid80s).

SO--hmm. cost--I see. Well then, I'd check out (i.e., search) all the posts on the Board re those credential evaluators the Big Three (I assume TESC follows a similar proceedure). And of course their info on the matter.

It sounds like your're anxious to get an estimate, and I'm sure these schools won't be giving you that info before they get an eval. Thus, your best source prior to shedding the bills out would be finding someone else who has been in a similar situation--perhaps the evaluators themselves would share that info, or else, if your really lucky, find someone on the Board who gome thru this route!

A final idea? Post the quesy as a New Thread--"Do You Know Anyone..." who has tranferred University credit from an African U to the Big Three? There may be a friend-of-a-friend who has done this, rather than current actives....

    GOOD LUCK!

    Sounds good, thanks...

    Hi Orson,
I will certainly try to find someone on this forum who has gone through the process, I will follow your suggestion.
Your advice is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hello, I suggest you take a look at the TESC webpage. Go to Alumni and Friends page. Look at the listing on the left and bring up the TESC magazine Invention. There is an article in the spring issue of 2001 about the relationship of TESC and UNISA. This may give you some ideas. I believe there may be someone from UNISA on staff at TESC but will be unable to check until next week when they are open. Have a great weekend. Hille

    Dear Hille,
I just read the personal message you sent me and the previous post. Thanks for your input. I will check the TESC website as you suggested and will definitely let you and entire forum know how things are shaping up.

    Warm regards,

    Patrick
