Previously, I have discussed with others the difficulty of finding a strong M.A. in English via DL here: http://www.degreeinfo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6404&highlight=English

    For those interested:

Just found out that Washington State University has an M.A. in English with an emphasis in teaching available entirely (with one campus visit at beginning and end) by DL. This can be found on WSU's English department's website under the three listed "MA programs."

It requires 1 year prior teaching experience, and a bachelor's degree in English.

    $456/credit.

30 semester hours, 14 of which are core courses, the rest are electives, 6 credit pass/fail project at the end. 6 credits may be at undergraduate level, 6 credits may be transferred in from another program.

If attempted via DL it takes three years and four summers (one course offered per term).

Program plans are individually customized with advisors, summer residency option available for intensives (its not clear if summer classes go on all summer or in an intensive format).

    FYI,

    Nice find, Christopher...!

So--are you betweem deciding on history OR english for your next program? Or is there something else?

    Hey Christopher,

Just wondering ...why don't you go straight into a PhD program now? Do you need more credits in English or History?

Also, do you plan to teach History?

I was also looking at a master's in English and History. I decided instead to pursue a doc in communication.

    Best of luck.

    Hey guys

I've been away for the holiday.

Honestly, I don't know WHAT I'm going to be studying, or even if I will do another MA at all. It all depends on other factors. Right now, I'm just collecting data on different programs.

By the way, I was extremely disappointed when I found out that WSU's English MA could only be done one semester at a time. Even if intensives are allowed, it's not as good of a deal as, perhaps, some of the other summer based programs.

Pretty soon, I should be starting as an adjunct at National University. Given that, I may not have to get an MA in "English" to be competitive for a junior college teaching position. I may just need the required credits, and then I would just do the MLS at FHSU, or something.

    Chris,

Perhaps you've mentioned this else where, but I was wondering if you're engaged in ministry on the side. I ask because you have some pretty good credentials.

    thanks Roscoe...

It's nice to get a personal question every once in a while.

I'm actually just "ministering" to my wife after a hard four years of seminary. We have moved back to our hometown, and she is going to be finishing her bachelor's in organizational leadership at Fresno Pacific University (Visalia campus). It's a once-per-week commute and she will only need a year. So honestly, I'm excited about "getting involved" in church work as God allows... But presently, I'm just trying to get a job to make this goal possible for my wife.

We have only been living in Bakersfield for about 3 months now. This ministry question has been keenly on my mind because we have a very good opportunity at our home church. As the pastors there say, I could just do "whatever I want."

We'll see. Keep me updated on how your dissertation works at the south-african-university-but-I-can't-remember-which-one.

    Blessings:D :D :D
