FT-PT student status verfication in DL

An friend living in Europe is considering regular DL with a US, UK or Austr. university or CLEP (via Excelsior a la Lawrie Millers BA in 4 weeks) as way to finish his US bachelor degree. However, to keep his low-tax student job he needs to provide the European employer with proof that he is actually still a (full-time?) student.

If he were attending a school in residence, the school would simply provide a letter verifying student status. But will DL schools also provide such a letter and, if so, is full-time still considered 12 sem. credits or more? As my friend may vary his enrollment between full- and part-time from one semester to the next but does not want to jeopardize his job status, would DL institutions in the US, for an example, provide him with a statement that merely verifies that he is a student without indicating full- or part-time status?

Which institution would provide such verification for students pursuing a degree via CLEP (such as through Excelsior) in BA-in-4-weeks type of plan?

    Constructive comments much appreciated!

    Happy holidays!

Good Morning, I think if he or she can overcome the postal requirement for FEMA EMI this may be an option. I would wait until January first and start knocking off twelve credits. Convert them at Frederick Community College. This will give your friend twelve rapid credits on a Frederick Community College transcript for 600. This may secure his student status and then he can proceed with other options. Hille

Touro had no problem sending a letter to the U.S. Dept. of Education stating that I was a full time student (even though I was a DL student). This was necessary in order to defer my undergraduate student loan. I am sure other schools would have no problem providing similar documentation if your friend were enrolled in a FT or PT degree program. As for the CLEP style programs, I don't know.

    Good luck!

    Good afternoon (from Europe) Hille,

Do you know whether Frederick Community College would provide a student status verification despite DL via FEMA?

    Thanks,

    Russell

Hello, this is how I would handle the situation. I would immediately register at Frederick Community College. When 1/1/03 rolls around next week I would begin taking the courses to submit for credit. I would actually start that today and wait to submit the answer sheet until next week. If you feel like contacting me on the degree of difficulty of these courses please do. I would attempt to finish the twelve credits within 2 weeks. It can be done. The FEMA EMI courses get a special discount so you will need to e-mail FEMA EMI for a course brochure with the payment information. I would also as a precaution have any CLEP tests your friend is taking after 1/1 transferred to that transcript. He will receive a transcript proving the twelve credits which should pave the way for any (PROOF) situation. I would do this as quickly as possible. I hope this helps your friend. Hille

    Happy New Year ...

Happy New Year and thank you for the suggestion.

I would also like to read comments from any members in Europe studying via DE with European or US schools. Are you classified as a student for tax purposes?
