My weekly Email from Costco included bargains on digital cameras, fruit baskets . . . and distance learning courses. They've apparently linked up with a Thomson company, for online computer and business courses, from Microsoft certifications to business ethics, which are ACE-evaluated and can earn credit at Thomas Edison, Excelsior, and many other places. Costs range from $13 to several hundred per course. And they have short interactive segments available for a free try-out, which may possibly answer the occasional question here about what an on-line course is like. http://www.costco.com/frameset.asp?trg=Info%2Fexecutivemembership%2Fonlinecomputer%2Easp&log=
I can't seem to get the page in question. Can you offer any suggestions for search terms that I can use to access the information that you are speaking about? Thanks, Darren.

Great concept! "For the ultimate convenience, you may take the GMAT while waiting in our checkout line"
MBA in Wholesale Management/Marketing. MBA in Membership Management. Any new degree ideas? "Costco University"
Has anyone called any college to find out what course gets what credit? It would be nice if they would of put the recommended credit next to the course description or something like that. Are NETG courses proctored or are they done completely online? BR, Bill
Bill, these same Netg courses are offered by many Community Colleges as non-credit courses. While the Big Three may grant credit under the ACE guidlines, my guess is most other universities would not.
Bill, The courses are completely online. Netg courses are offered as part of the Navy's E-Learning program. See this thread. http://www.degreeinfo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6684 "NETg Courses Qualify for ACE College Credit NETg e-Learning courses and Wave Boot Camps receive college credit recommendations from the American Council on Education Naperville, Ill., August 21, 2002 – NETg, a worldwide leader in corporate education and training and part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC, TSX: TOC), today announced that the American Council on Education (ACE) has recommended that NETg’s e-Learning and Wave Boot Camp product lines be eligible for college credit. According to ACE content specialists, selected from college faculty, NETg offerings are comparable to college level programs and can now be used as transfer credit at participating colleges and universities." http://www.netg.com/NewsAndEvents/PressReleases/view.asp?PressID=65 Skillsoft is the other large contractor working with Navy-Elearning. Dredging up this older topic to report that Costco does now list schools that *should* offer credit for these courses. For example, they list the following California schools: CA California Allan Hancock College California State Polytechnic University California State University-Bakersfield California State University-Chico California State University-Dominguez Hills California State University-Fresno California State University at Hayward California State University at Los Angeles California State University at Northridge California State University at Stanislaus Coastline Community College Cogswell Polytechnical College Columbia College De Anza College Diablo Valley College Dominican University of San Rafael Don Bosco Technical Institute Fresno City College Gavilan College Golden Gate University Golden West College Heald Colleges of California Humboldt State University John F. Kennedy University Kings River Community College La Sierra University Los Angeles Harbor College Los Medanos College Menlo College Monterey Peninsula College Mount St. Mary's College National University New School of Architecture Palomar College Patten College Point Loma Nazarene College San Diego City College San Diego State University San Francisco State University University of La Verne University of Redlands University of San Francisco They list other schools by state as well. They do not list how many units would be available. My guess is that any courses that do get credits probably get 1 (given the brevity of the courses). They've also added some courses as well. For someone interested in business, it could be a cheap, relatively painless way to earn units. Tom Nixon
Costco is just another example of corporate influence on higher education. Costco's affiliation with Excelsior and Thomas Edison comes with a price. Most corporation/university affiliations are the result of "donations" made by the corporation to the college/university. In return, the corporation gets to use the school's name in their overall marketing plan. Some courses and programs will carry the sponsor's "logo". I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see Excelsior offering a 20% discount on a 10 oz container of mayonnaise with each course taken through Costco.
Clearly you've never shopped at Costco. Nothing there ever comes in just a 10 oz container. 10 gallon? Maybe. Tom Nixon
Actually, I have shopped at Costco. It's just that I have no need for a 10 gallon container of mayo. But it wouldn't come as a surprise that DL courses through Costco are offered at bulk rate.
Why not a Walmart or Sams Club Ph.D? To all my fellow networkers : I think it would be a very kool if Sam Walmart could give us all a great education at walmart prices. And we could all get our money back if we didnt like the training !!! Happy New Year Traderneil

Re: Costco Distance Leaning Being interested myself in earning credit five gallons at a time I searched TESC's site for more info and thought I'd post this, for those curious, from one of the TESC current student forums: "Re: Costco Distance Leaning Author:_Susan Friedman, Asst Dir Learn_() Date:___01-06-04 13:15 More updates: NETG courses taken thru Costco WILL NOT HAVE ACE CREDIT AWARDED. I have been checking with ACE and Costco has not applied to be an authorized site to provide NETG courses. Bottom Line: DO NOT TAKE COSTCO COURSES if you want college credit.?"
