If you fail a CLEP exam (I have not) is there a time period that must pass before you are allowed to retake it?

    Thanks,

Unfortunately, I failed the American Government clep by 1 point. I called clep partly because I was angry that I failed by 1 point and partly because I feel that there is something wrong with that particular test. I talked to a rep and she said that the school that you are enrolled in has the power to permit you to retest within the six month time frame. All the school needs to do is fax them permission. I also asked them if there were complaints about the Am Gov test. She told me to write to one of the supervisors. Oh well, it's worth a shot.

    Maria,

    Sory to hear your news.

But if you would be kind enough to share that address with us on the board, I'd like to add my voice to the chorus

    Hi Orson,

Somehow I knew you would be interested in this thread. I read your previous post about this particular clep.

Anyway, here is what happened. I took the American Government clep and failed by one point. I couldn't believe I failed because it didn't seem that hard. I had read that this clep was difficult. But, when I was taking this exam, I just didn't have the feeling that I was struggling. Actually, I had just the opposite feeling, I was feeling pretty confident. When that score popped up, both the proctor and I were stunned. The proctor has sat through 5 of my cleps and she would always here me getting nervous at the end of the test. Not this time, we were chatting when the score popped up. She was great though, she told me stories of her own test failures. Anyway, I just felt that something is not quite right with that test.

I called ETS because I was upset that I failed the clep test. I wanted to speak to someone. I needed to vent. I did talk to a very nice person who listened to my concerns. She told me that I could retake the exams within the six month waiting period if the school that I was enrolled in faxed permission. That fax # is 609-771-7430. I asked her if there were complaints about the AM Gov
clep and she gave me the above referenced fax number. She told me to write my concerns down and fax or email to the program director/clep supervisor, which I did. They sent back an automatic message that someone would get back to me within three days.
The phone number I called is 609-771-7865. Here is the email address: [email protected]

Sorry this is so long. I am, however, feeling much better about this whole thing. Just gotta move on.

    Maria,
I am in the same situation. Currently, I am only 1 credit away from my degree and failed the clep general math exam-no study. anyway, is it possible for you to give me the name of the person who helped you? I have already spoken with Excelsior and they are faxing the permission letter to your stated fax number, but I don't know who would handle this.
Their office is closed today so I cannot find out by calling.
    thank you! John

    John,

I was told to address it to the attention of the program director/clep supervisor. The person I spoke with did not give me any specific names.

    Hope this helps, good luck.

I see a loophole in the system here. Or, at least, in the system I am in. Tell me if I am crazy or on to something.

Situation: School requires three specific CLEP tests to meet admission requirements.

If I fail one, and have to wait six months, I am not going to be admitted.

If I fail one, then I quickly register at Excelsior, get a permission letter sent for quick retake, and then pass and register in my preferred school.

Even if it takes thirty days to complete this cycle, I have enough room. Not enough room for a six month retake, however.

Excelsior registration not wasted, as credit is obtained that would lead me to a degree there as well, which is in my long-term plan.

Christian, you may very well be able to do that, but when I spoke with Excelsior yesterday, they were very cautious about this. Specifically, they wanted to see my other grades before granting permission and this was indicated in their letter to ETS. Also, I think that since I was already enrolled and so close to degree completion helped.
Try it if you need to; hell, I could be wrong!
