    I'm thinking about taking the research methods in psychology test from excelsior college. But, is worried that the test might be extremely hard to pass. Is it?

    If you judge it by Business Styx it is quite easy, however, it you are like most social science majors and detest math it will be quite hard.......so, it is a matter of perspective. I took a psych research course as an elective in the MBA program and the Styx course in the MBA curriculum covered more in 30 minutes that the Psych Styx did the whole quarter......and the instructor told me that half the class took I's and was doing extra work to pass. He also said that if had of told him I took the MBA styx he would have given me the A and sent me on my way.......and to think I could have used those three months more productively.

    Passed it, scored an "A".

    I thought it was relatively easy, with the only real surprise being more questions on the finer points of research designs than I expected. As far as math goes, you don't actually have to do any statistics, but you do need to understand the terminology.

    For study materials, I used the Princeton Review's Cracking the GRE Psychology and Barron's Psychology EZ-101 Study Keys, the latter which I also used for the CLEP Introduction to Psychology and Introduction to Educational Psychology exams (passed both of those too!).

    I took the test about a month ago and got a "B". It was not too difficult but you will need to study. I got a book from a college library by the same author as the book that Excelsior sells as a study guide (an older version of the recommended book) and it really worked well for me.
    As far as stats, just know the terminology.
    Good luck.

    Here are some simple (I hope) stats books--one recommended on the referenced thread and two others I found. {I am looking toward a similar course and am a total maths moron.}

    Cartoon Guide to Statistics by Larry Gonick (not Slotnick) & Woollcott Smith. Harper US$16 isbn 0-06-273102-5 This one was recommended by someone on the other thread, who presumably knows a lot more about this stuff than I do.

    Conquering Statistics by Jefferson Hane Weaver. Perseus US$17 0-7362-0495-1

    Reading Between the Numbers: Statistical Thinking in Everyday Life by Joseph Tal. Mc Graw-Hill US$16.95 0-07-136400-5

    Note that my suggestions are coming from someone at a total loss when he looks at a church budget--but these seem designed to help the mathsless person get an idea of basic concepts in a relatively painless way. Hope they work...
